BYOT Classroom Management Tips
T.I.M. Weekly Tech Tips / Week of February 9, 2015
Classrooms with mobile devices for students have very different classroom management issues than those without. Whether you are a BYOT classroom, have access to a classroom set of laptops, or you have checked out an iPad cart, here are some tips to help you maintain control.
What Are Your BYOT Rules?
Mrs. Parker's Tips
- Designate times for technology use.
- Monitor student usage.
- Put devices completely away when not in use.
- Confiscation of improperly used devices
Mrs. Knight's Tips
- Phones stay on front right corner of desks. This allows me to see when the phones are in use.
- Students should only use them when I give them permission.
- Remember that QUIZLET can read aloud to them, so earbuds are not a great idea during tests if your students use QUIZLET very often.
- Add a list of do’s and don’ts to your syllabus.
Other Suggestions
- Have students keep their devices flat or elevated.
- Establish consistent consequences in your room for any off task behavior.
- "Ask three before you ask me." Have students support each other as you will not be able to support all devices in the room.
- Monitor, monitor, monitor!
- Always have a "Plan B." Have other ways to support the lesson.
- If you are going to let students use devices when they are done with work, be clear on what they can do with the devices, such as: read, work on other classwork, educational games, etc.
