PLC Purpose
Professional Learning Community: Time Designed to Improve Student Achievement;
On Wednesday, August 29, students were released two hours early for Platte County School District's first Professional Learning Community (PLC) day of the 2018-19 school year. PLC days are designed to establish sustained and uninterrupted time for educators to work together and collaborate. Collaboration is an essential ingredient for continuous school improvement and staff development. Both of these are directly related to student achievement. This time allows educators to examine and respond to the four basic fundamental questions of a Professional Learning Community:
- What is it we want students to learn?
- How will we know when each student has achieved the learning?
- How will we respond when a student is not learning?
- How will we respond when we know a child has mastered the learning?
Pirate Football and Pirates Rock Kickoff
First Home Football Game and Pirates ROCK Kickoff - Friday, August 31: Football Game Reminders
This Friday is the Pirates first home football game (Pirate Stadium, 7 p.m. kickoff). Before the game, Price Chopper in Platte City is hosting our Pirates ROCK Kickoff and Community Tailgate! Come join the community before the Pirates take on the Park Hill South Panthers. The tailgate is from 5-7 p.m. and includes performances by PCHS drumline, dance team, cheerleaders, and PCMS cheerleaders from 5-6 p.m. Free hot dogs, chips, water, popcorn, facepainting, and FUN! See flyer for additional details.
FOOTBALL GAME REMINDERS: Pirate football games are a time for us all to gather and enjoy some fantastic company and great sports. Please remind your students that the football stadium is an extension of the classroom, and appropriate behavior and good sportsmanship are expected. As a reminder, elementary students should be supervised by a parent and with you at all times.
Major Saver Fundraiser
Platte County Education Foundation Fundraiser - August 29-September 12
This week, we kicked off our Platte County Education Foundation discount card sales program. Our schools, in conjunction with Major Saver, work with businesses throughout our District to offer a $15 discount card providing customers with 21 local buy-one-get-one-free offers. In most cases, redeeming only two offers offsets the cost of the card. Proceeds from the card campaign directly benefit your student's school and the Platte County Education Foundation. The Foundation gives back to the Platte County R-3 community by awarding annual pre-K through 12th grade classroom and building site grants, as well as senior scholarships. Check out the video to hear from last year's grant winners and scholarship recipients. Your student should have brought home an envelope with information and instructions on Wednesday, August 29. Collection dates start on Wednesday, September 5, and the program wraps up on Wednesday, September 12. Please consider purchasing a card and supporting our schools!
Homecoming Week September 17-21
PCHS will host the Victory Supper on Wednesday, September 19, starting at 6 p.m. at Pirate Stadium. The Victory Supper will be a community pep rally with our coaches introducing the fall teams, alumni coming back to speak, and the crowning of the underclassmen candidates and the Homecoming King. This evening will also feature performances by the PCHS drumline, PCHS cheerleaders, as well as alumni cheerleaders. PCHS cheerleading alumni are asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for a short practice. Food will also be provided, and the event is open to the community.
The Homecoming Parade will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 21, and will run on Fourth Street from Thomas Drive to the former Rising Star Elementary. Students will be dismissed three hours early that day. Parents and the community are encouraged to arrive by 2:25 p.m. as Fourth Street between Zed Martin and Thomas Drive will be closed to traffic beginning at 2:30 p.m. Thomas Drive between Siegrist Elementary and Fourth Street will also be closed. If you'd like to participate in the parade, please contact Kyle Perkins or Gena Puckett for an entry form by September 19. AGAIN THIS YEAR: There will be a shuttle bus to take parade participants and their sponsors back to the main PCR-3 campus. The shuttle bus will be parked along Zed Martin Drive. Floats will disband in the Rising Star Elementary parking lot and will take the path from the Rising Star playground to Zed Martin Drive. We encourage parents to pick up their participants at the PCR-3 main campus.
Immediately following the parade, on the Platte County Courthouse steps, the Traditions Band will perform several pieces including the Platte County "Fight Song" to get in the Homecoming spirit. Wells Bank will also be hosting its annual Community Tailgate Party, which will feature a PCR-3 Voice Competition following the parade in the parking lot of the High Pointe Shops Shopping Center. Come cheer on your favorite faculty as they sing their way to stardom, and enjoy free food and drinks!
Homecoming Football Game: The Pirates will take on the Raytown South Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 21 at Pirate Stadium. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime.
