HERSHEY NOTES
APRIL 6, 2018
FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FIELDS
I hope that you were able to find some time to enjoy family and friends over our spring break! We are ready to head into the home stretch and make this last quarter of school the most PAWsome ever!
Teacher committees will begin working on creating classes for the 2018-2019 school year the first week of May. Creating class lists is a task that involves consideration of many factors and is a job that is taken very seriously. If you wish to provide input for the committee to consider when making your child’s placement, we request that you adhere to the following guidelines:
Provide input in writing. My email address is lfields@tsc.k12,in.us.
Please refrain from asking that your child be assigned to a specific teacher. We are looking for a description of the type of learning environment you feel best suits your child.
Fourth and fifth grade students will be assigned to a home room and then switch classes for language arts and math. Students will be placed in these classes according to their academic and social needs. Students may move in and out of assigned language arts and math classes as individual needs change. It is likely that most students will experience each teacher assigned to the grade level; therefore, no parent input is requested for these grades.
Requests to separate or combine specific students will be considered if a valid reason is provided. Combinations based on friendship do not meet this criterion. A request from both parties wishing for a specific student combination must be submitted in order for it to be considered.
Parent input must be received by April 30 with no exceptions. Committees are slated to begin this process May 1 at 7:45 AM.

It is with great sadness that I announce the retirement of Mrs. Lynn Isenbarger. “Mrs. I “ has been the highly acclaimed teacher of Hershey’s ⅘ High Ability Class for the past 12 years. While we wish her the utmost happiness as she enters the next phase of her life, she will be greatly missed at Hershey!
Thank you to each of you that made a donation to the local Down Syndrome chapter of World Wide Down Syndrome Day, March 21. Hershey collected approximately $202.00 during our “Guess the Baby” staff picture contest and Crazy Sock Day. Don’t forget about the Down Syndrome “Buddy Walk” on May 19 at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater. The fun starts at 9:00. We hope to see you there!
MISS RIORDAN'S NOTES
With the second round of ISTEP coming up starting 4/16 to 5/4, students may be stressing out a little over the test. Here are some tips to help alleviate some of that test stress!
Talk about the test at home. Encourage your child to do the best they can.
Get a good night’s rest. Rest is imperative for helping children feel energized and ready to take on the day.
Eat breakfast--It is the most important meal of the day! A full belly helps the child feel more focused during tests.
Get to school on time. A rushed start to their day can cause stress and frustration.
Practice, practice, practice deep breathing with them! Not only can this be helpful for stress, but also helps kids to use this time to “stop and think” before they respond. There are many ways to deep breathe, but this is the technique I have been practicing with students:
-Think of your favorite smell. Imagine breathing in deeply your favorite smell (through your nose), hold for three seconds and “blow out the candle”. Repeat 3 times. You know you are taking a good deep breath when your stomach “inflates”, as if you have a balloon in your stomach, instead of your chest. This is a great tool because it can be used anywhere at any time!
Additionally, with several of the classes, I have been doing small group exercises that practice and model empathy, or putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes. To continue this message outside of school, here are some ways to incorporate practicing empathy daily at home:
Ask your child how they are feeling. Encourage them to use words to describe how they are feeling other than “good”.
Taking turns talking and listening to one another.
Use a calendar and have each family member write down something kind they did for someone else each day.
