Weekly Update #8: October 17th
Another Short Week...
We had a another short, yet productive, week in the Springman bands! Please make sure to take some time to read about our exciting NEW ensembles, Wildcat Winds and Symphonic Band. Information about these groups can be found below.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 17th
- 7th grade band will rehearse at 7:25 AM

Great Lakes Naval Base Trip
Our Great Lakes Naval Base field trip is coming up on Thursday, October 27th! Please make sure you read through all the information and sign the permission slip HERE!
New Ensemble Info
Our Band, Orchestra, and Chorus department was excited to announce our new ensembles starting in November! You can click HERE for our parent letter (which explains our new ensembles) and click HERE for the performance evaluation requirements!
Please "take note":
- Students who are in Wildcat Winds can ALSO be in Symphonic Band!
- Students will continue to be in lessons group by grade level (if you'd like to be in a lesson group with a friend of a same instrument, let Mrs. Nellis know!)
- Students can continue to participate in BOTH band/chorus or BOTH band/orchestra
SmartMusic and Performance Assessments
Several students have expressed an interested in purchasing SmartMusic for at-home use. If you are interested, you can learn more and purchase a year-long license HERE. If you choose to purchase SmartMusic, I would strongly recommend purchasing the SmartMusic microphone (on the site), as well.
Springman owns several SmartMusic computers that students are welcome to practice along with. Students who would like to use school SmartMusic should e-mail Mrs. Nellis 24 hours in advance for an appointment.

Chicago Double Reed Festival!
The 2016 Chicago Double Reed Festival will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Ravinia's Bennett-Gordon Hall. The Festival will be directed by Steve Colburn, former principal oboist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Festival registration and check-in begins at 9am. There will be a faculty performance at 4pm in Bennett-Gordon Hall, followed by an oboe and bassoon choir performance.
The following classes will be offered:
- Beginning Bassoon Class
- Bassoon Master Class
- Bassoon Care and Maintenance
- Bassoon Calisthenics, based on the teachings of Darlene Julissa
- Master Class: The Bocalphone
- Oboe Master Class
- Oboe Reed Adjustment Class
- Baroque Ornamentation
- How to Practice for Auditions
- Taking a College Audition
Courses will be taught by the following clinicians:
- Bill Buchman, bassoonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and bassoon professor at DePaul University
- John Dee, oboe professor at University of Illinois and DePaul University
- Gerik Fon-Revutzky, bassoonist with the Rockford Symphony
- Naomi Bensdorf-Frisch, freelance oboist
- Jennet Ingle, oboe professor at Valparaiso University
- Lewis Kirk, bassoonist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago
- Drew Pattison, bassoon professor at DePaul University
- Keith Sweger, bassoon professor at Ball State University
- Tim McGovern, bassoon professor at University of Illinois
