LCE News from Mrs. Blaney

September, 2018

Our first full month of the school year is complete!

It's hard to believe, but we have completed 30 school days. Students have, by now, learned or have been reminded of the rules and routines of their classrooms and of the school, and wonderful learning experiences are taking place every day. Please be sure to follow us on Instagram @lceblaney and/or Twitter @lcelions to get day to day updates on what we're doing at LCE!
Big picture

Kids LOVE play! Pretend play, sports, board games, or just hanging out, they love to spend time together at recess.

Governing Board Meeting Update

I'd like to update you on the most recent governing board meeting. One of the results of this meeting was that there was approval for reaching out for bids for the fencing project for LCE. Our board realizes the importance of safety and security for our campuses in La Cañada, and we reviewed a slide presentation with approximate costs, material choices, etc. Something that surfaced from that meeting was the question of how high the steel tube (front and back facing) fencing should be. The original proposal called for 6 feet. 8 feet was discussed, but we are considering 7 feet as a good compromise.

Tech News from Jamie Lewsadder

New to Crhomebooks? Did you read the recent email from our CTO, Jamie? Here is a snippet from that email:

"For your computers in the home, including Chromebooks, there are a variety of home wireless routers and add-on devices that can help with filtering the internet and setting screentime limits. You can read about these here. One that specifically works with Chromebooks is Disney’s Circle."

Character Day: September 26

La Cañada Elementary, Palm Crest, and Paradise Canyon schools participated in Character Day on September 26. The video below was shared with some of our classes (if developmentally appropriate). Throughout the day, teachers presented experiences for each age group. Some of those activities included:

• focusing on humanity with an emphasis on love, kindness, and social intelligence

• talking about what it means to have “good character”, acting it out and making character posters

• tying it to 2nd grade Apple Day by talking about Johnny Appleseed’s good character

• focusing on respect and what that looks like throughout the school

• focusing on respect and kindness using a lesson entitled “I Was Just Kidding!

• reading a book about character and watching a video from Let it Ripple (like the one below)

• showing "30,000 Days" another video from Let it Ripple, and having students reflect on what makes them unique and writing those qualities on color circles. Students also created a brainstorm chart using the circles and drawing arrows connecting to how they could use these special characteristics to help the world be a better place

•Our Student Council highlighted character traits at our recent Spirit Rally!

Book Recommendation for Parents

Each month, I would like to recommend a book for parents. If you are like me, you may be looking for answers to questions for yourself or looking to help someone else. Jessica Lahey, author of The Gift of Failure (also a FANTASTIC read), visited us a couple of years ago. She suggested some books to me, and I have copies of each in the office if you are interested in borrowing one! My pick for you for this month is That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized and Distracted Boys Succeed in School and Life, by Ana Homayoun. While the tile suggests that this book is for parents of boys, it is not. It's good for parents of boys and girls, and especially upper grade parents who may be having (very normal!) difficulties with helping their students learn executive functioning skills.

Podcast for Kids

A nice podcast for kids, especially young ones, is Peace Out. This podcast is a nice one to play at night, especially if your child is having trouble calming down, relaxing, and/or falling asleep.
