Fifth Grade PEAK
#weslithertosuccess
Special Announcement:
We have a class Slogan: We slither to success. Your child is invited to create a trademark or illustration for this slogan for our class contest. If your child wants to participate in the class contest, please have him/her turn it in by Friday, September 19! A few submissions have already been submitted.
THEME: Kids CAN
The Brain:
- We learned about the four brain lobes. Students illustrated each lobe and how they use the lobe. Next students, wrote 6 paragraph essay describing the functions of the lobes in more detail. The essays this year were the best I have ever read! If your child did not finish, they need to finish at home -- the work saved in his/her Google drive.
- We watched and took notes on a two part United Streaming video to build background knowledge about the brain.
- Students used books and internet resources to read about different brain topics. We are trying to narrow down to one topic to research for the year. The brain is so fascinating and their are many choices to consider.
- Students took a note-taking quiz. I have included a short "screen cast" on our note taking process so you can better understand our objective and purpose. This year we will take notes with a technology app called Evernote but the format will still be the same as last year.
Centers
Enrichment Centers:
- Topic Study: Students are busy taking notes. Each student started a Padlet to take notes online. This "pad" can be accessed at school and home. Students did a great job taking notes on their topic. Everyone is so focused! Additionally, students are learning how to write an essential question to drive our research.
- Math: We learned our math procedure (record keeping) and solved math problems! Everyone worked hard! This math is notably harder than previous years. Persistence is the key!
- Science: We finished our first science experiment. Our focus is to learn the scientific method through application and to use critical thinking skills to draw conclusions from science experiments. Today's testable question: Will aluminum foil or black plastic collect raise air temperature higher? Students will conduct a series of science experiments to answer two questions. 1. Which materials raise air temperature higher? 2. Which materials maintain air temperature (heat) better? We learned about independent variables, dependent variables, and critical constants. Additionally we applied our critical thinking word - accuracy - in our measurements and when we figured the averages of the trials.
Critical Thinking Words this week: Purpose, Clarity, Accuracy, Precision

- Students are actively using their Chrome books
- Organized Google Drives
- Practiced sharing and saving documents
- Bookmarked important websites
- When student email is available, we will begin Google Classroom. This will allow me to send assignments directly to students and students will electronically submit the assignment to me upon completion.
