Grizzly Growl

Update from Mr. Ruthford
Hello Fairhaven Friends and Families,
I hope this week’s Grizzly Growl finds you all well. Our team continues to appreciate each of you—your support, trust, and effort—as we navigate these challenging times. My hope with this week’s letter is to create some clarity around how we will be working next week with Monday’s holiday. Because of Memorial Day, our teachers will not be sending emails with assignments, checklists, or learning activities on Monday. Instead we will be sending the week’s work out on Tuesday. The shortened week will also mean our teachers will be reducing the workload given to students to accommodate the holiday. We hope this adjustment will allow us all a bit of rest before we return and focus on the homestretch with this school year—just four weeks to go!
Please continue to reach out to if you have any questions, suggestions, or needs. We are here to help and appreciate all you do—together we are achieving more than alone.
My best,
Steve

Mr. Gillman Recommends May 18-22
Gill's Rec's for the week--Yo Peoples---I've read over 800 young adult novels during the course of this sacred journey that has been my 28 years teaching---so here are three more of those for this week:
- The Homeschool Liberation League--Lucy Frank---thought it could inspire some of you in these times---about a 13-year old who wants to do her learning outside of school, after she spends a summer at Wilderness Camp. Maybe you'll get some ideas and motivation for following your passions, interests and curiosities.
- Restart by Gordon Korman---this star athlete middle schooler--part of the 'cool' bully group at school--suffers a fall from his second floor window--gets a major concussion and comes out of it with a loss of memory--has no recall for who he is and what he was--and so when he finally gets back to school a month later, he ends up taking everything and everyone at face value---with no past version or attitude holding him back. He's totally free to be nice to everyone--for he has no 'reputation' he's trying to uphold. A magical story with trademark Gordon Korman tension and intention--humor and irony.
- Running Dream--by Wendellin Van Drannen---a star high school runner is bussing with her team after taking the 400 at the district track meet. The bus has an accident--and she ends up losing her leg--the story moves from there in surprisingly beautiful, soulful and inspiring ways. It won't be what you expect--and it will be better. This is a story of the heart--and it will shed light on what can matter most--especially so during these times we are currently engaged with.

Just Read
Today, I finished listening to The Kingdom of Back, written by the same author as Wildcard and Legend, Marie Lu. This book takes place during the time of Wolfgang Mozart when he began composing music, but it focuses on his sister, Nannerl, who also composed and played music. Nannerl knows that she will never be famous for composition because women were forbidden from doing so. However, she might get her chance to become famous if she just helps out a magical stranger who takes her to a mysterious land where she must conquer a fantasy world.
"A beautifully composed historical fantasy that will enthrall readers, especially those with music in their hearts."--School Library Journal
You can find this book on Libby or at Village Books, which offers books to be shipped or with curbside service.
