Message from the Principal

Hello Ramsey Families,

We are two weeks into the school year and staff continue to get to know their students and teach expectations around "doing school" online. Thank you for reaching out to staff with questions of connecting with teachers, getting technology to work and completing attendance. Our continued partnership is critical for our student's academic, social and emotional success.

I also want to make sure that nutritional services is continuing home delivery of meal boxes. Families can sign up for home delivery or pick up meal boxes for kids 18 and under in their household, whether they are enrolled in SPPS or not. This also includes people over 18 who have a disability and are enrolled in a school program.

Meal boxes are available in two ways:

1. Home delivery: A week’s worth of breakfast, lunch and milk delivered to your doorstep one day a week. Registration is required.

2. School pickup: A week’s worth of breakfast, lunch and milk can be picked up at five high schools Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Registration is not required. All of the details are available at spps.org/fallmeals in English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali and Karen.

Finally, it is critical that families visit the onestop page (https://www.spps.org/Page/31224) to complete your iUpdate. As part of this process please fill out the Application for Educational Benefits if you haven’t done so already. While this doesn’t affect the cost of meals this fall, this information is vital in securing classroom funding for Ramsey Middle School and all other St. Paul Schools.

Big picture

Every SPPS family should complete an application for Education Benefits/Free or Reduced Price Meals. Not only does this help us identify families in need of assistance, it also allows the District to receive federal dollars for classroom programming.

A new form must be completed each school year. Additionally, families who have completed an application and have experienced a change in household income or size are encouraged to complete a new application. Click the button below to complete the application.

Distance Learning Meal Service Plan

Buses are delivering meal boxes to homes, with curbside pickup at select schools. Only families who do not receive meal deliveries should pick up meals.

If you have not already registered for home meal delivery, please click on the button below.

IB-MYP Update:

The IB-MYP (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) is the backbone of our curriculum and instructional practices at Ramsey, but it also helps our scholars develop into caring, knowledgeable global citizens who are ready to take on anything. I have been impressed by the way that students (as well as staff) have been demonstrating the IB Learner Profile traits already this year, especially being risk-takers as we embark on Distance Learning 2.0. It is important that students continue to work on being good communicators with their teachers (using email, office hours, and synchronous learning time) to get the support they need. I look forward to sharing more about the IB-MYP at Ramsey in the coming weeks. Feel free to check out our website or send me an email for more information.

-Elisabeth Fontana, MYP coordinator (elisabeth.fontana@spps.org)

The monthly library newsletter will be coming out soon - keep an eye out for an email with a link to library tips and tidbits! RMS Contactless Curbside Library Check-Out is coming soon. Students will be able to place books from the school library on hold and pick them up Thursday mornings. More info to come...

Digital Media Explorations Update:

This week we spent time thinking about how we learn best. The class shared their learning preferences and tips for learning strategies that work for them. They also told me what they need from me to be successful. Next week we will begin our first unit on the media's role in our lives. Parents, you can help your scholars start thinking about the media by having conversations about where you get news and what kinds of tech tools you use to find out information. Use the #TableTalk conversation starters to help begin that conversation!

Attention 6th Grade MN Studies Families:

On Monday, September 21, we will start our first unit on Minnesota Geography. Please check the daily folders in Schoology EVERY weekday so your child doesn't fall behind in completing any assignments. I will include a video with directions in each folder as well. My week day Google Meet office hours from 1:30 - 2:00 pm using the code: RMSWalt. You can also make appointments from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at kathrine.walter@stpaul.k12.mn.us.

Attention Visual Art Exploration Families:

If your student has visual arts explorations and still needs an art supply kit, pick up days are Thursdays at Ramsey from 7:30am-1:30pm. Email anna.king@spps.org if you have questions.

Technology Information

Monitor Student Progress SPPS encourages parents and guardians to use the iPad to monitor their child’s academic progress and communicate electronically with their child’s teacher(s). Ask your students to show you what they have learned and created with the iPad, and discuss how they use the device in school.

Campus Mobile Portal and Schoology Mobile Apps
Parents and guardians can use the Campus Mobile Portal or Schoology app installed on the iPad to view their child’s grades, attendance, and upcoming assignments. This year SPPS is transitioning to using Schoology as a tool to house course materials, support communication, and record grades. Grade information may not be available to parents of elementary school children through these apps.

Email Communications
Parents may also use the Safari browser app to log in to their personal email account to send emails to their child’s teacher(s). Parents and guardians should not add a personal email account to the iPad’s built-in Mail app because personal emails may be visible to anyone who accesses the device.

Pad Care and Proper Use

  • Always keep the iPad in the case.
    • Keep keyboard attached to case unless necessary for photographing or similar activity.
    • Close keyboard cover and carry with two hands- clutched to chest, carry like a book, or zip securely into a backpack.
    • Walk with your iPad and do not carry iPad inside folder or trapper keeper.
    • Keep away from water or a heat source and do not leave in a cold or hot car.
    • Keep food and beverages away from your iPad.
    • Make sure keyboard cover is closed and put in sleep mode.

If your iPad is damaged or needs to be replaced please report the issue by emailing or calling Saint Paul Public Schools Technology Services:

Comcast Internet Essentials Free Through December

Comcast provides basic wireless Internet called Internet Essentials, and it is free through December. The district will provide a Hotspot, but if you are finding that isn't enough data or you are unable to wait for a ticket to be completed, contact Comcast to apply https://www.internetessentials.com/. If Comcast does not extend the free price after December, you'd have the option to quit when it is no longer free or pay the $9.95/month + tax.

Athletics Update:

Please see the district update below regarding Middle School Sports.

SPPS RESPONSE REGARDING MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS

Saint Paul Public Schools has had to make several difficult decisions about what programs we are able to safely offer this fall during a continuing COVID-19 pandemic. One of those decisions was around middle school sports. Several challenges, including staff availability, transportation, student safety and participation levels in middle school sports, make SPPS unable to offer any middle school sports this fall.

It is also possible that we will not be able to offer middle school sports if and when SPPS transitions to a hybrid learning model, due to the same challenges listed above. SPPS will reassess this decision each season to determine if we are able to offer middle school sports this winter or spring.

We understand how hard this decision may be on our middle school students and families, and hope to be able to offer extracurricular activities as soon as it is possible for us to do so. Thank you for your support of SPPS and your students. If you have additional questions, please contact your school’s athletic director.

Supporting our Athletes: As the Athletic Director I want to provide an opportunity for our student athletes to connect with each other while we are distance learning. During our Friday student group opportunities, I will be offering a Google Meets for our student athletes. Updates with a Google Meets code will go out to all of the Ramsey students via Schoology on Friday mornings! Please encourage your student athlete to attend these Google Meets if they are interested in connecting and participating with other student athletes at Ramsey. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Email: Alicia.Ekegren@spps.org
