CALLAWAY HILLS FAMILY NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER EDITION 2022
GREETINGS CALLAWAY FAMILIES!
Wow, it is hard to believe that midterm has passed and we are now looking forward to Parent/Teacher Conferences. The year is off to an incredible start and I am so proud of our students, teachers, and staff at Callaway Hills. I want to also thank you as parents and guardians. Your continual support is appreciated! Working together, we can achieve the extraordinary. I am honored to be a part of this special group and school!
October is a busy month. Please reference the calendar often. Classroom Newsletters will include important information as well. Upcoming dates include PD days, Glow Run, Parent Conferences, Dine to Donate, and many other opportunities to support and be involved at CH.
Finally, please remember that school begins at 7:45. When you arrive after that time, they are considered tardy. If you are arriving at 7:46, you must escort your student to the front office and sign them in. I know this is a hassle, and mornings are hectic, but this is a JCSD policy. The policy states, "Any student arriving late or leaving early must have their parent/guardian come into the elementary office and state the reason for the student being tardy/dismissed." This procedure ensures the safety of our students. Please help us keep your student safe!
Have a great week and we look forward to seeing you throughout the month of October!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH COACH REYNOLDS
In Physical Education we have really been focused on our Cardiorespiratory Health and the importance of exercising to maintain healthy heart and lungs. Grades 2-5 have completed their first PACER test for the year and will complete the Mile Run in the first couple of weeks in October. Playing by the rules of recreational and organized athletic opportunities has been the highlight of the beginning of our school year. Students are learning to understand that in order for these activities to be fun and fair for all involved, playing by the understood rules of the game is of upmost importance for the enjoyment of all who participate. Please make sure to try and have your student where their tennis shoes on days when they have physical education class to give them the best opportunity for success. Thank You.
LIBRARY NEWS WITH MRS. WILSON
Great things have been happening in the library! Summer improvements, thanks to former Callaway Hills graduate and current JC student, Logan Hartley. Logan was taking a woodworking class at Nicolas last year when he learned I had reached out to his teacher to see if their class could build some shelves for our library. Unfortunately, the class wasn't able to but Logan took on the project over the summer. The shelf turned out great! A BIG thank you to Logan for donating your time and energy to making our library a better place:)
Students have been busy learning library manners and expectations for the library. Fourth and fifth grade students have already begun the Mark Twain reading challenge. I would LOVE to see all students in those grades participate!! The library has also been abuzz with guest readers. Pre-K got to host Mr. Eric from Missouri River Regional Library and second grade hosted Mrs. Webb. We appreciate those guest readers coming and sharing their love of reading with us!
I want to thank all the families that came to Family Night and supported the Book Fair. I have already purchased new books for the library with the profits from the sale! Giving kids choice when selecting reading materials is so important in developing lifelong readers that is why having the funds to add new materials to the library is so imperative. Thanks again for supporting your child and our school!!
MUSIC WITH MR. VEILE
The music classes at Callaway Hills have been rocking! We have been focusing on reading rhythms and learning fun new songs to sing with our friends.
The fourth and fifth grade classes have a "Music Style of the Month;" we've learned all about jazz music and some of its main performers. In October we will learn about ragtime music, including a famous Missouri resident.
The third grade students are learning about a new composer each month. In September we learned about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the most famous child prodigy of all time. In October we will learn about the man, the myth, the legend himself, Ludwig van Beethoven.
The first and second grades are learning a new patriotic "Song of the Month." In September we focused on "My Country 'tis of Thee," while in October we will learn "You're a Grand Old Flag."
Kindergarten and first grade are learning about a new instrument each class period. So far we've learned about instruments such as the violin and trumpet.
I'm excited to keep making music with the amazing students of Callaway Hills!
READING ROCKS WITH MRS. BOWDEN
Literacy Intervention Groups (LIG)
You will receive a letter on Tuesday, Oct 10 if your child has been selected for Title 1 Literacy Interventions. During their intervention time, your child will work in a small group setting fine tuning their reading & writing skills. He/she will be provided explicit and systematic instruction. This intervention will be in addition to their regular classroom literacy instruction during their reading block! I am looking forward to working with many of your children this year!
COUNSELING CORNER WITH MRS. PARKS
Responsibility is the October Character Trait. During our weekly counseling lessons, students will be participating in discussions regarding what Responsibility looks like and sounds like in a classroom and around our school. These ideas will help define what Responsibility is at CH.
What is it? Responsibility is being accountable for one's actions and to know and follow various rules, laws, and codes of conduct. Responsible citizens treat others fairly, are trustworthy, and honor their commitments.
Students who are recognized for showing this trait are given verbal feedback with Cougar Cash to spend at our Cougar General Store, presented with written WooHoos to celebrate success with the Mrs. Pistel, and given whole class compliments. The CH Staff will be looking for students in all settings who are exhibiting this character trait, while continuing to look for Respectful and Self-Disciplined citizens as well. We are building Students of Character at Callaway!
We are also gearing up to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Please plan to celebrate by participating in our daily theme dress-up days from October 23 - October 31. School appropriate Halloween costumes may be worn on the 31st. No masks, weapons, scary/violent costumes or make-up please. Click on the image to view each day's theme!
FREE/REDUCED LUNCH FORM
Hello Callaway Hills Family,
We are excited to share with you that the district will be piloting a new program at Callaway Hills Elementary beginning on Monday, October 3rd. Your building is one of two schools within the district where this program will be piloted.
This program will provide free breakfast to every student until further notice. All students are eligible to participate, regardless of their free or reduced price meal status. However, please note that this program does not include lunches, only breakfast.
If we determine the program is successful based on participation and financial considerations, then it is possible the program will be extended for future years or to additional schools. It is important that families who are eligible complete the Free & Reduced Meal application in order to ensure program success.
In order to receive free or reduced price lunches you will still need to qualify through the application process. If you have not completed a Free & Reduced Meal Application for the 2022-2023 school year, please be sure to do that as soon as possible. You can request an application at the front office of the school or access one online HERE.
Please feel free to contact the Nutrition Services Department via email (nutritionservices@jcschools.us) or phone at 573-659-3123 if you have any questions about this new program or about completion of the Free & Reduced Meal Application.
Thank you,
