Student Art Contest
Say ‘Happy birthday, Illinois!’ with art
Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum sponsors student art contest for state bicentennial
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
The theme of this year’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.” Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes.
The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018.
Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday.
Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ALPLMartcontest.
Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning.
The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A year-long celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December. More information about the bicentennial can be found at www.Illinois200.com.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, at 212 N. Sixth St. in Springfield, is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through old-fashioned scholarship and modern technology.
The library holds an unparalleled collection of Lincoln books, documents, photographs, artifacts and art. It also has some 12 million items pertaining to all aspects of Illinois history, making the library one of the nation’s leading institutions for genealogy and history research. Meanwhile, the museum uses traditional exhibits, eye-catching special effects and innovative story-telling techniques to educate visitors.

Hispanic Heritage Month
At the end of the meeting (when some of you left) it was mentioned that some teachers may want all their kids to participate in a performance. Due to logistics that would not be possible to have everyone on stage. Therefore, each teacher will present the country they chose in their room. Parents will be given passports to circulate and see what you are presenting. That way you can decorate your entrance and room and set it up any way you wish to present it. If you still want to team up with someone and present together you are still free to do that, please just pick a room that the students will visit to see that presentation, (i.e. I could team up with Connolly and Lucas; we are all doing Mexico and we will present in Lucas’ room). Now we will be traveling throughout the building which will become the whole spanish speaking world.
A quick read.. and something to ponder. :) Food for Thought!

Come One, Come All! Get your flu shots here! :)
Flu season will be here before you know it! We are fortunate that Osco Drug will be here to administer flu shots without you having to make an appointment, drive to a clinic/physician's office or wait forever before being seen (not to mention being in the waiting room with a bunch of already sick people who didn't get their shot)!!
You just need to carry the PPO health insurance here at Big Hollow to participate and best of all, Osco will bill our insurance carrier direct as long as you are a PPO member. If you are an HMO member, you will need to contact United to find out the best way to obtain your flu shot.
If you do not have insurance, or simply want to pay out of pocket, the cost is $27.99.
You must be a Big Hollow employee to participate.
If you think you may be interested, please click the link to sign up on the Google Sheet and indicate which building you plan on attending. This does not obligate you in any way! If you don't want to put your name on a list for everyone to see, then use initials (any initials will be fine). This is just to help Osco get an approximate on how many doses we may need for each building.

Recycling- PLEASE READ!!!
This year we will be enhancing our recycling program. We need your help! There will be new recycling containers placed in your classrooms. We need to avoid throwing items in the garbage if they can be recycled.
Students will need some help determining what is recyclable and what is not when placing items in your classroom bins. Attached is a flyer that I was hoping you could all share with your students on Tuesday to help facilitate this.
Every night, we will be asking the cleaning company to empty your classroom bins into the large recycling bins in the pods. Those will then be taken to the bins outside in back of the school.
