Guiding Reading
Can you believe December is already here? The first 9 weeks and SLOs are behind us and our guided reading groups are up and running. Whew! Now we are ready for our next step. In order to make certain that we are making the most of our time with students, consider using the lesson plan templates from Jan Richardson's book.
Here is the link to find the templates:

If you haven't started using them already, just try it with one group. It won't hurt a bit! They will help you think through your lessons and help you be prepared for the short amount of time you have with your groups. These plans, when used in conjunction with The Next Step in Guided Reading make planning for your groups easier. Being intentional with your planning is critical to moving kids to the next level. Remember to use your data to find out what students know and what they still need to learn. Ask yourself, " What does this child need to be able to do to become a better reader?", and then make a plan for that. Your anecdotal notes will guide you day to day as you meet with your groups. Take time to listen to each child read while you take a short running record as you meet with your groups. This data is powerful in planning for the next group meeting.
