Bulldog Blast
Wednesday, September 15th , 2021
Hello Northwood Families!
Friendly reminder, Tomorrow, Thursday, 9/16, the school will be CLOSED in observance of Yom Kippur. We will resume classes on Friday, 9/17.
Recently we are getting a large number of students who are not bringing their own masks to school and are coming to the office daily to get a mask. Please ensure that your student comes to school with a mask. We understand that a student will forget to bring a mask occasionally, and we will help in that situation, but it is not the responsibility of the school to provide a new mask on a daily basis. Thank you for your support and understanding.
If you have not done so already, visit THIS LINK to view the resources referenced during BTS Night.
Handbook Sign Off: REQUIREMENT, this must be completed for each child, and is due September 24, 2021
National Hispanic Heritage Month 2021
Ways to Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month With Kids
From September 15th to October 15th, the U.S. celebrates the cultures and contributions of Americans who identify as Hispanic or Latinx.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is a great time to teach your kids about the histories and traditions behind these cultures, try new traditions, and reflect on the important role they play in our nation today. Each week during this month we will be sharing a different idea.
Here is an idea:
Explore the geography of Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Spain.
The terms “Hispanic” and “Latinx” include all of the above – so get out the globe, and challenge your child to count up all the countries. (There are more than 30!) For a closer look, go online. You can use Google Maps to take a 3D tour of many locations, and Google Earth to “visit” historic sites.
We want to hear from you!
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are asking if any interested students would like to be showcased in our Bulldog Blast/ school social media page on why they are proud to be Latinx. This can be expressed however you see fit. For example, a 30-second video showcasing a traditional dance, a favorite regional song, a favorite recipe, etc.
If interested please send me any videos or pictures to be showcased to curbano@northwoodcs.org
Calling all book lovers!
Frida and Her Animalitos by Monica Brown is a true story based on the life of an amazing artist, Frida Kahlo, who loved to paint and also loved her animals.
Pelé: King of Soccer by Monica Brown is the biography of a world-famous, Brazilian soccer player who overcame the odds to fulfill a promise to his father. Pelé was the first man in the history of soccer to score a thousand goals.
Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates by Jonah Winter is the story of a Puerto Rican boy who was determined from a young age to play baseball. You can journey along with Roberto as he leaves everything familiar in Puerto Rico to play baseball in America.

Parent Corner:
*Parent Flat Rate Program*
The School District of Philadelphia has launched a program to provide a monthly payment for the 2021-22 school calendar year to eligible parents who choose to opt-out of bus, van, or cab assignment and instead will drive their child to and from school.
We are excited to announce we are further incentivizing participation in the Parent Flat Rate Program by increasing the payment to eligible families who choose to enroll. All eligible families will now receive $300 per month ($3,000 for the school year) for transporting their children to and from school. We now also offer the option for families to receive $150 per month ($1,500 for the school year) for transporting their children to school in the morning only, but still utilizing bus, van, or cab service in the afternoon.
*To enroll in either of these options, please fill out this Google Form*
**Please note that once you register for the Flat Rate Program you are required to participate for the duration of the 2021-22 school year and are unable to return to transportation services.
