I can't begin to tell you how much I love our families and our community and how blessed I consider myself to be a part of it! The staff at Havel takes our responsibility to provide a safe learning environment very seriously. We also model to our students that we, as adults are learners ourselves and we adjust practices and procedures as needed.
Given the heightened awareness of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus), I want you to know, from me, what steps we have put in place to do our best to keep kids healthy while at school. All students, K-6 wash their hands before they eat lunch or snack and after using the bathroom. When using technology in the classroom, students are sanitizing their hands prior to beginning their work. Students are washing their hands prior to going to media center and those computer stations are cleaned daily.
Our day time custodian, Mr. Chris, is sanitizing touch points multiple times throughout the day. This include doorknobs, light switches, counters in the office, and benches in our lobby. The nighttime custodial staff is also sanitizing touch points in the classrooms as a part of their nightly cleaning duties. Our lead nightime custodian Delija is making sure all classroom soap dispensers below half are filled.
Our staff is committed to being proactive and following the recommendations from Utica Community Schools and the health department to keep our kids as safe as possible (within our control) from germs and viruses. If you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to email me at kristina.tepper@uticak12.org.
Mr. Pangborn's Creative Corner
Hello! For the last several weeks our Havel artist have been hard at work creating wonderful pieces for our upcoming school art show. The school art show will be Tuesday, March 17th from 5-7 pm. All student artwork will be framed for a professional looking presentation. In addition, all the frames are available for purchase for $29. Cash and check are accepted and all proceeds go to new art supplies for your students. Furthermore, here is a brief description of some of the assignments that we have working on. All artwork is based on UCS curriculum guidelines and state benchmarks & standards.
Lower El: In kindergarten we learned about Pop Art and created a colorful artwork using repeated designs and handprints. We also worked on Rudolf the Reindeer, Warhol paper flowers, and poppies in a field using wax resist and watercolors. In first grade, students explored the area of printmaking, created clay pinch pot birds/owls, and a picture depicting a bug’s eye view with a snail and mushrooms. In second grade, we created snow globes, clay skunks, and animals (birds and red eye tree frogs) from the Amazon rain forest. Third graders made goldfish pictures inspired by famous French artist Henri Matisse as well as clay fish sculptures. Furthermore, we looked into the world of Zentangle animals.
Upper El: Our fourth graders worked on creating a fruit still life using oil pastels. Also, we learned about creating a functional clay cup and saucer. Fourth graders studied the art of Japanese fish rubbing called “Gyataku” and did printmaking with Styrofoam on an oil pastel background. Fifth grade students had an opportunity to create a clay pot similar to the Native Americans using the coil technique. Birch trees were the inspiration behind the winter landscape paintings. We also created cityscapes using warm/cool colors as a main focus. Sixth graders studied about the day of the dead artwork from Mexico, as well as the aboriginal artwork from Australia. We also worked on creating clay speakers using the extruder tool. Students were encouraged to find their own subject for their school art show piece.
