Jr First Lego League - Winter Session Information
London Lego League - Winter Session
It's finally here! Registration for Junior First Lego League is now open.
Jr. FLL is an international organization in the FIRST Robotics family. This level is for children who are 6-9 this school year. This means children can be turning 6 or turning 10 this year and still participate.
This year's JFLL challenge is Waste Wise! The teams are challenged to choose a piece of trash and find out what happens to it all the way up to where it ends up and then show what they have learned through a Lego model with one motorized part and at least one simple machine. The team will also create a "Show Me" poster to tell others about what they have learned.
Teams will meet 7 times during the session for 1.5-2 hours/session to learn about their piece of trash, find out what happens to it, investigate simple machines by building Lego models and work as a team to design and create a Lego model.
The winter sessions will take place on Saturday mornings at Westmount Public Library from 10:00 until 11:30-12:00. The dates are as follows:
January 9, 16, 23, 30; February 20, 27; March 5
JFLL teams usually present their work at an expo hosted by Western Engineering in the spring. More information on this will follow. There is an expo Saturday, December 5 from 10:00-2:00 at Althouse College if you are interested in seeing what JFLL and FLL (the next level) are all about.
The cost for the winter session is $75 per registrant. This includes the cost of registering the team with FIRST Robotics, all materials used in the session, and each participant's share of the rental space at the library. Materials used will include all Lego pieces for the project, components of simple machines, and motors as well as detailed plans for construction.
Group instruction will be provided by volunteer Beth Mai, certified teacher, Lego enthusiast, and member of ABC. Each team will require one adult volunteer to help guide the groups to work respectfully and cooperatively during the sessions.
To secure a space for your child, please complete the form found here and submit the payment for your child(ren) via PayPal at PayPal.Me/bethmai or e-transfer to bethmai@live.com.
