The 5th Wave

by Rick Yancey

"If aliens ever visited us I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America. Which didn't turn out very well for the Native Americans." -Stephen Hawking

Cassie Sullivan is living a normal teenage life. She goes to school, hangs out with her best friend, and has a crush on a boy who doesn't even know she exists. However, this all changes when an alien mothership looms creepily above the earth. These aliens are not here to make friends with humans. Actually, quite the opposite. They are here to kill off all humanity in 5 waves so that they can inhabit the earth. The story begins during the fourth wave and we find Cassie all alone searching for her little brother and wondering if she is the last person on earth.

"We're here, and then we're gone, and it's not about the time we're here, but what we do with the time."

I give this book a 4 out of 5 star rating. It mixes together multiple different genres: romance, science fiction, dystopia, and mystery all into one novel. The 5th Wave has many twists and keeps you questioning and predicting what will happen next. Therefore, I would recommend this book to teenagers (13 + due to the violence) and young adults who enjoy those genres.

The 5th Wave is also a movie!!
