"No school can work well for children if parents and teachers do not act in partnership on behalf of the children's best interests" - Dorothy H. Cohen
A Note From Mr. Wollberg
We are also spotlighting this week our Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students who celebrated International Dot Day on Friday, September 15. This global celebration of creativity was enjoyed by all as we decorated our own large dot with our friends and admired all the different potential artists. The dots will be collected and displayed as a group collage for all to enjoy. Please see the pictures below!
Last week, all families with children in grades Kindergarten through Eighth Grade should have received MAP reports. Also, students who are currently in Fourth through Eighth Grade should have also received IAR reports on updated student progress. If you have not received them, we can certainly make extra copies for anyone, just reach out to your child's teacher. I am including the accompanying video once more this week to help explain the reports as well as the MAP and IAR family resources that I encourage everyone to take a look at.
Next week will continue to be busy! On Thursday, October 5 we will have Picture Day. If you would like to print out and have your child bring in the Picture Day form that can be found here.
For those of you who prefer to order online, please find the online form found here.
We will also hold a Superintendent Forum on Wednesday, October 4 at 6:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to ask questions of both myself and Dr. Newby while also receiving updates on GLS. This month, we will also be sharing a presentation that will be shared and presented to all Junior High Students on the dangers of vaping in the coming weeks. I am also respectfully requesting that if there are other topics that in future months you would like us to address such as social media, teen dating, etc. please leave feedback above in our Suggestion Box to help us plan accordingly.
Lastly, Friday, October 6 there will be no student attendance for our planned Teacher Institute Day. We appreciate everyone allowing us this day to continue to work on how our Project Based Learning (PBL) work ties into real-world experiences in the workplace. I look forward to a great day of learning with our staff.
As always, thank you all once again for such a great week. On behalf of our amazing GLS staff, we appreciate all your help and support and I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Ryan Wollberg

Guitar club will be performing at the Winter Fine Arts Night on Thursday, December 14th.
Choir is in full swing at 21 members strong. We are planning a field trip to a Chicago Wolves game in November.
Band has 13 members, some new, some returning. We are excited to begin and continue learning our instruments

Also, if you happen to be traveling on 173 west towards Antioch look for a new sign that celebrates Grass Lakes' very own Logan Lennon who was our state champion in the long jump last Spring. Way to go Logan and way to be a BRAVE!
Attendance Matters!
School Breakfast/Lunch
Student Absences
Grass Lake School hours of attendance are 7:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. on regular schedule days and 7:45 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. on early release late-start days. An answering machine will take messages during the hours when the school office is closed. When reporting an absence please indicate the reason for the absence and if it is due to illness, please report symptoms including if your child has a fever, cough, or sore throat. This will assist the district in assessing when a student will return and whether it must comply with any reporting or notice requirements.
The telephone number to report absences is: (847) 395-1550.
If the school has not heard from you and your child is absent, you will receive a call to verify the absence. School code provides that parents/guardians/other persons having legal custody of a child provide telephone numbers at the time of enrollment to enable the school to notify the parent/guardian/other person with legal custody of the child’s absence from school. Accordingly, this verification of absence call will be made to the numbers provided at registration and not necessarily the parents’ places of employment.
Parent Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures
Below you will find a map for your convenience as it relates to our drop-off and pick-up procedures. If you plan on picking your child up early from school, we kindly ask you to email your child's teacher as well as Cristina Monroy, our administrative assistant. When you enter the building for early pick or late drop off this should all be done through our main entrance. Make sure to have your ID when picking your child up as we want to make sure we are sending your child home with an approved individual.
When your child is dropped off they will enter through our gymnasium doors and in the afternoon they will exit through those same doors (yellow box below). Please wait in your car and we will release students to you as fast as we can. Again, I do ask for your patience in the beginning of the year but I promise you, it will continue to get faster and faster. Also, please do not drop off your child until the gymnasium doors open at 7:30am.
