Willbern Whale Tales
March * 2018
A Note from Mrs. Roberson
Many of the protocols we have in place are completely grounded in maintaining the safest environment possible for you children. We have monthly fire drills and each semester we practice what to do in the following scenarios:
*Intruder in the Building
*Police Activity in the Area
*Hazardous Weather
*Hazardous Air Quality
Though it may seem sad that we have to practice such scary situations with elementary students, it is the reality of the world in which we live. Know that students are aware that we are "practicing" so they will know what to do in any type of emergency.
Our front desk protocols are also part of safety at Willbern. Parents and guardians must show valid ID to go past the front office area or check a student out of school. We don't allow changes in transportation after 2:30 so that we have ample time to ensure each student is going home the correct way and with the correct people.
If you want to allow a family member like a grandparent have lunch with your child, a note must be sent to the front office that morning. Otherwise, we will not be able to send the visitor to the cafeteria.
Additionally, we have a Campus Emergency Operation plan in place that we revise each time we have a drill or a new experience that teaches us a better way to ensure safety for all.
Below you will see attachments to a safety pamphlet produced by the district in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. I encourage you to print one out and share it with your family.
Please know I am always willing to answer any of your questions or concerns.

No Joke
Everything is funny as long as it is happening to somebody else.
~ Will Rodgers
Sadly, in our society, much laughter is created at the expense of others, whether it is online, on television, on social networks, through emails or texts. Cyberspace reality has made it possible to tease, bully, and belittle others instantaneously and even anonymously. Start a dialog with your students about appropriate cyber-communications and which pitfalls to avoid. Encourage them to seek help for themselves or for someone else if something inappropriate is going on.
