MAKING ORNAMENTS TO BE SHOWN ON A NATIONAL STAGE
Averill Park High School was honored to have been chosen to represent New York state for the 2019 National Christmas Tree Experience. Students enjoyed the process of research and discovery surrounding the wonderful aspects of our great state. This project evoked a sense of community and pride throughout the district on many levels. Our students chose topics ranging from the state flower, tree, and beverage, to our cities and mountains.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HOLD VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLIES
The Poestenkill, West Sand Lake and Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary Schools held their annual Veterans Day Assembly, honoring our men and women who served in the armed forces! Thank you to all who attended and all who made it a great day.
AMS STUDENT SELECTED FOR ALL-COUNTY CHORUS, BAND
Band and Chorus members from Algonquin Middle School were selected to perform at the 2019 All-County Festival at Hoosick Falls CSD on Nov. 8. Bravo to all who put on a great performance! For a full list of students that participated, click here.
MHSL FIFTH GRADE STUDENT CHOSEN FOR CAPITAL DISTRICT YOUTH CHORALE
Vivian Savage, a fifth grader at Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary, has been accepted as a new member of the Capital District Youth Chorale! Vivian and the CDYC will perform with the Albany Symphony Orchestra in its annual winter concert at the Palace Theater.
PHYSICS STUDENTS SEND PUMPKINS FLYING THROUGH THE AIR
Regents Physics students made and launched pumpkins as part of the projectile motion and energy units! Students recorded data about how far they went and how long they were in the air. They will be using that to analyze the angle of trajectory and the speed that the pumpkins were launched.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HOLD RAINFOREST ASSEMBLIES
Each of our Elementary Schools held a Rainforest assembly last week! The assembly promoted awareness and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation on the local, national and global scale. The show consisted of lots of rainforest animals, which students were able to get an up-close look at!
TECH STUDENTS ATTEND NATIONAL MANUFACTURING DAY AT RPI

SNOW DAY CHALLENGE
During the snow day, 3rd Grade students in Ms. Hilt's Class at Poestenkill Elementary were able to complete a Snow Day Challenge of turning a box into something useful.
LOGAN BARSALOW, NOAH BONESTEEL PLACE AT CROSS COUNTRY SECTIONALS
Freshman Logan Barsalow placed 2nd in the girls race and junior Noah Bonesteel placed 8th in the boys race in Class B today at Sectionals! Both have now qualified for the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 16 at SUNY Plattsburgh.
APCSD HOLDS VIEWING OF SCREENAGERS: NEXT CHAPTER
APCSD held a free viewing of the new film "Screenagers: Next Chapter". Afterward, school counselors led a group discussion where both parents and students engaged and offered insight.

WSL PARTICIPATES IN FOOD DRIVE
West Sand Lake Elementary students participated in the Kiwanis food drive and collected lots of items for donation!
APHS ADDS CHARGING STATIONS
As part of our ongoing work to create flexible spaces which meet the needs of 21st century students, we have installed three new charging stations around the new tables in the PE lobby. These stations work with all types of devices. One has the cords necessary to charge, while two work with the cords you likely carry with you.
CASDA HONORS MR. & MRS. WHIPPLE
CASDA held its 4th annual Friends of Education Awards Dinner. Averill Park CSD's Mr. Bill and Mrs. Betty Jean Whipple were honored for their selfless contributions to our school community. Read more here.
AP CONNECTIONS SORTS TOYS
Averill Park High School students involved in AP Connections sorted toys for the Toys for Tots program! The Toys for Tots program is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes donated items to disadvantaged children during the holidays.
STUDENTS TALK CLIMATE CHANGE WITH DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY
APHS students Kate Happy, Jack Kelly, Joe Kocsis, and science teacher, Darlene Hunter, spoke to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International's local chapter about climate change. Read more here.

COMIC HYPNOTIST VISITS APHS
Comic Hypnotist Michael Ray visited Averill Park High School on Nov. 13 and put on a show for all in attendance! The event served as a fundraiser for the Class of 2020.
SPANISH 4/5 ATTEND CAREY INSTITUTE
Nine Spanish 4 and 5 students attended an immersion day at the Carey Institute, where they spent the day immersing themselves in the Spanish language and culture, playing games in Spanish, eating food based on the Latino culture, creating skits, and learning from four Spanish-speaking professors from Peru, Argentina, Puerto Rico and California.
HANNAFORD TEAMS UP WITH THE ATHLETICS BOOSTER CLUB
The Averill Park Athletics Booster Club will receive a $1 donation for every $2.50 Community Bag sold in November at the Hannaford store located at Route 43 & 150 in West Sand Lake.
PES PARENTS' NIGHT OUT ON DEC. 6
Friday, Dec. 6 is Parents’ Night Out at Poestenkill Elementary! Drop off your kids (ages 4-12) from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and enjoy a kid free night! Children will enjoy pizza, arts and crafts, gym time, a holiday movie, and time with their friends. There is a cost of $5 per child and $1 per slice of pizza. Read more here.
WSL KKIDS SELLING FRUIT WITH KIWANIS
West Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids is participating in selling citrus fruit with Troy Kiwanis! Citrus is $25 per 20 pound box. All orders and payments are due by Nov. 19. Checks should be made payable to the KIWANIS CLUB OF TROY, NY. Delivery will be on or about Dec. 10-12. Read more here.
COUNSELING CENTER FINDS WAYS FOR COLLEGE/CAREER READINESS
The Counseling Center is continuing to look at ways to help students become more college and career ready. This year, we are asking all students to input their extracurricular activities in Naviance -- a college and career software program which APHS utilizes to support students in making their college and career choices. For most students, the username is their school email and the password is their school pin times two. Students can log in at https://student.naviance.com/averillphs
NEW VISIONS INFORMATIONAL ON DEC. 11 FOR JUNIORS
Any junior that may have an interest in the career paths offered by New Visions, and would like to learn more about the program, should come to the counseling center and sign up for the information session on Dec. 11 at 1:00 p.m. This meeting will lay out all of the expectations of the program and will have a question and answer period where all of your questions will be answered. New Visions offers four programs – Medical, Scientific Research and World Health, Visual & Performing Arts, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Each program has its own location off our campus that students earn not only their remaining high school credits for graduation, but many college credits as well.
