Flywheelers
We had a wonderful time at Flywheelers yesterday! A huge thank you to the parents who were able to join us to help chaperone the trip. Thank you to Mrs. Deegan, Mrs. Gretzinger, Mr. Lauria, and Mr. Keiser. The students learned about what life was like on a farm in Northern Michigan in the 1890s. We shaw a thresher, a sawmill, learned about how people pumped water from the ground and even got to go on a hayride. These are just a few of the things we learned yesterday.
Ipads
Students got their iPads on Tuesday. I'm going to keep them at school until next Friday so we can go over classroom routines, procedures and expectations for iPads in the 4th grade. I'll include more info about the iPads in next Friday's letter.
Language Arts
This week students read from the story "Because of Winn Dixie." We focused on story structure and talked about plot, setting, and characters. We also learned about point of view and flashback in fictional stories.
In writing we finished our summer stories. We also started talking about writing a descriptive paragraph.
Our target spelling skill was short "a" and long "a".
Finally, for grammar we focused on sentence structure and learned about subjects and predicates.
Math
This week in math we focused on comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers through 999,999. Students enjoyed playing a place-value partner game with dice. They also completed two placement tests on MobyMax (one for math facts and one for general math skills). I will send more information about MobyMax next week.
Social Studies
This week in social studies we started chapter 2. In this chapter we are reviewing geography terms and working on map reading skills. We've also talked about the five regions of the United States. Finally, students shared their social science artifacts and worked to try to identify other students artifacts.
Science
This week in science we wrapped up our lesson on plant structures and started learning about what structures plants use for protection. Students did an activity analyzing different plants and how they protect themselves from the environment and animals.
If you have box tops send them in!! We love them!!
