South Central Livestock Judging Clinic Recap!
The Webster County Extension Office hosted the annual South Central Livestock Judging Contest & Clinic that was June 3rd, at the Webster County Fairgrounds. The clinic and contest were unfortunately canceled in 2020 due to Covid-19, so youth were excited to come back to Bladen in 2021 to freshen up on their livestock judging skills.
This year’s turn out was great with sixty-five total youth who participated in the event, while thirty-one of the youth were kids from Webster County. Blaine French, the livestock judging coach for the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and assistant were at the event to give the youth tips and pointers on what to look for while judging livestock. The youth were given eight total classes to evaluate with four animals in each pen - two sets of market hogs, market goats, breeding does, breeding sheep, market lambs, breeding heifers, and market steers. Each pen of livestock were brought in by volunteers.
Youth were divided up by age divisions- clover kid, junior, intermediate, and seniors. Awards were given by top individual of each age group, top animal in each species, and top team. Madison Lienemann of Franklin County was the only clover kid who participated and did an outstanding job. In the junior division, there were a total of fourteen kids ages eight and nine years old. The top team awarded went to Harrison Mead, Addi Kohmetscher, Brenlee Alber, and Ashlynn Auten of Webster County. Top individual went to Brenlee Alber of Webster County. In the intermediate division, there were thirty-four kids ages ten to thirteen years of age. The top team went to Kaisha Alber, Anna Mead, Dylan Auten, and Halley Minnick of Webster County. The top individual went to Kaisha Alber of Webster County. In the senior division, there were sixteen kids from ages fourteen to eighteen years of age. The top senior team went to Abby Scholz, MaKenna Lutjelusche, Abigail Lutjelusche of Phelps County, and Spencer Jezbera of Franklin County. The top individual went to MaKenna Lutjelusche of Phelps County.
The participants received ribbons and amazing prizes donated by the following sponsors: Webster County Youth Council, Gottsch Livestock Feeders, The Corner Nook, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, Lemke Cattle Company, Kohmestcher Feeds, Adams/Webster Farm Bureau, and Heritage Bank. A free hamburger meal lined up by Wilson Alber and several amazing sponsors was available to the participants, staff, and volunteers that day.
The Webster County Extension Staff would like to thank all the families that brought their youth to participate in the event. A big thank you to all the prize/meal sponsors, livestock sponsors, Blaine French/assistant of UNL Livestock Judging Team, volunteers and Extension staff from Franklin, Clay, and Nuckolls Counties for assisting that day. This day would not have been possible without all of these great sponsors/volunteers. To see full results of that day, please check them out on the Webster County Extension Website.
Congratulations to all the participants on a great day! We are excited for 2022’s clinic and contest!
