Why Do We Clap and Cheer for Our Children during This Time of Year?
This is the time of year when we clap and cheer for our children. They played in their final football or soccer game of the season. They ran their race for Girls on the Run or our Boys Running Club. They performed in the fall play or recital. They walked and flipped and rode a float in the Christmas Parade. We love clapping and cheering for our kids during these events. But, why do we do that? 1. It lets them know that they are important. When we make time to praise our children, we tell them they are inherently valuable and have worth. I am amazed when my kids remember we attended their big events. (I might have forgotten, but they didn't.) Our presence at these events in their lives really means something to them. It makes me realize now that I probably should have attended more of them. 2. It celebrates their effort and hard work. No one gets to the final game or performance without persevering through long practices and rehearsals. It is the payoff for the daily deposits of effort and learning. These recognitions help us, as adults, remind our children that the struggle and hard work they put into the task each day finally paid off. Effort, not just ability, is a great indicator of future success. Our children need to know that. 3. It brings a time of closure and evaluation. Once our kids finished a season or semester, we discussed whether or not they wanted to continue. We wanted to talk with them about what they learned and if they enjoyed it. There are "seasons of life" and we affirmed to them that they could make commitments for a period of time and then reflect on their participation. A "yes" said now did not have to be a "yes" for forever. This time of evaluation reassures our children the activity is about them and we are not "reliving our glory days" through them. Just because it was good for us does not always mean it is good for them. Our claps and cheers can be signals that "You made it!" and "You finished!" with no expectations that they will continue. As the fall wraps up, I hope you will make every effort to be there for your children and to celebrate their success. Let's be intentional with our words and affirmations so our kids know what our praise really means. We simply want to them hear the right messages from us. Please don't hesitate to share with us their success at home and in the community. We are proud of all they accomplish.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness, Principal

Information about the Flu
Parents and Guardians,
We currently have a large number of students absent with influenza, “the flu” and influenza-like illness at Cherry Park this past week. As you may know, the flu is spread easily from person to person and school-age children are among the groups most affected. Flu symptoms include fever (over 100 degrees F), body aches, headaches, sore throat, cough, and fatigue and typically lasts from 5-7 days.
If you suspect your child is getting sick, please do not send them to school. Students who are experiencing the symptoms listed above need complete the following steps:
- Stay home from school
- Call the COVID Call Center to report your child’s symptoms 803-980-2016
- The COVID Call Center staff will provide additional information about flu and COVID testing
- The COVID Call Center will also ensure absences are coded correctly
- The COVID Call Center will work with the Nursing Services department to determine classrooms that have an increase in student illness.
Our school staff are working closely with the RH Schools Nursing Services department and SC DHEC to monitor flu conditions in our school, make decisions about the best steps to take and ensure disinfecting practices are being followed. Custodial staff will continue to disinfect classrooms and common areas regularly. Classrooms with an increased number of sick students will be disinfected nightly.
Here are a few things parents can do to help our school reduce the spread of illness:
- Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or upper sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
- Take time to get a flu vaccine. Flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu. DHEC strongly recommends all South Carolina residents older than 6 months old get the flu vaccine as soon as possible to prevent the flu, unless they have a medical reason not to be vaccinated.
- Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.
- Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
- Don’t send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are sick at school will be sent home. Staying home when sick will allow your children to rest and allows you to monitor their health closely.
