February 2020 Enon Elementary School
Principal's Message
Dear Enon Families,
Welcome to February! I wanted to extend a thank you to all who helped with the recent PTO Staff Lunch on Jan. 31st when we had our early release for teachers to work on report cards. Our teachers really enjoyed the taco bar and we appreciate it very much.
Our itinerant music teacher, Rochelle Jordan, who worked at Enon on Thursdays recently accepted a full time position at Beulah Elementary school. We anticipate having a new itinerant music teacher in place within the next few weeks.
Please be aware of our Sick Day Guidelines and be sure to keep your child safe at home where they can rest and be healthy again before returning to school. It creates a health concern for us when children come to school sick as they can potentially infect both other students and staff members. We respectfully ask that you remain considerate of others and keep them home until they are healthy. Thank you.
We have many important events this month which I have listed below.
School Counselor's Week:
National School Counseling Week is Feb. 3–7. The week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and the tremendous impact they can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Please join me in thanking Melissa Bateman and Bernadette Hawkins for the fantastic job they do in supporting our students.
Black History Month
February marks Black History Month, a tribute to African American men and women who have made significant contributions to America and the rest of the world in the fields of science, politics, law, sports, the arts, entertainment, and many other fields. Our recent Virginia Opera "Oh Freedom!" show highlighted some of these important contributions. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about these important contributions in our library and art lessons this month.
Art:
This coming month, students will be celebrating black history month in the art room.
Students will learn about various black artists and the contributions they have made in the art community. We will be learning about Kehinde Wiley, Faith Ringgold, Jacob Lawrence, and Lois Mailou Jones. Students will learn about the artists, their work, and their lives. Finished projects will be displayed around the school for everyone to enjoy!
Library:
During the month of February our library will celebrate black history month by exploring the various contributions of African Americans. Throughout the month, students will hear about the lives and accomplishments of several American citizens including the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and George Washington Carver. Additionally, books and video biographies will be displayed to honor Caldecott winner, Kadir Nelson, Newbery Medal winner, Jason Reynolds and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work winner, Margot Shetterly. Intertwined will be lessons about biographies and further exploration of the types of literary awards available to African American authors and illustrators such as the Coretta Scott King Award.
100th Day!
Our 100th day of school is currently scheduled to be on February 12th! We celebrate this day with special math activities.

Valentine's Day/Early Release Day
Students will celebrate Valentine's Day this year by exchanging cards. As a reminder, our school policy is for two parties each year which are at the Winter Holiday break and at the end of the school year. Please do not send in food items or candy for your student to share as all food must be pre-approved to distribute. Thank you!
Our next early release day is February 14th. Mrs. Glunt would like to offer biking lessons to Enon students in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade on the half day Friday Feb. 14th to students who are not yet riding a bike without training wheels. The only requirement is that parents be present to learn the skill progressions in order to facilitate the learning process further at home. Email her at Heather_Glunt@ccpsnet.net to make an appointment. Slots always fill up quickly so send her an email to get in on the opportunity.
We are also hoping to host a career day opportunity on Feb. 14th. Please fill this form out if you are interested in sharing your career with our 4th and 5th grade Enon students on Friday, February 14 from 11:15-12:15. Mrs. Bateman or Ms. Hawkins will be in contact with you shortly!

Students are encouraged to write "To a Veteran" on the card and a special message such as Thank you for your service. We appreciate your help with this school wide project.
