Hello to the MMS Community!

We had a busy February at Massabesic Middle School. It was full of activities and making memories. We saw 7th grade students working in groups that crossed teams to complete the NASA Spinoff project, which then culminated in the Showcase on February 10 (see photos below). Team Allagash finished up their Wabanaki Week with a Snow Snake competition that was great fun! Team Pemaquid's Westward Expansion interdisciplinary projects are well underway and we are looking forward to seeing their creativity and learning. All of our sixth grade students enjoyed field trips to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to learn about our oceans. In addition to all this excitement, we held a full school assembly to celebrate the very successful food drive organized by Student Council. Thanks to the support of our very generous community, we donated almost 4,000 items to the York County Shelter and Pantry. At the assembly, over 40 brave staff members were pied in the face or covered in silly string to celebrate.

Last month included National School Counselor week and we are fortunate to have an amazing school counseling team of Mrs. Tremblay (Gr. 6), Ms. Landez (Gr. 7) and Mrs. Pagano (Gr. 8). This month brings us School Social Worker's Week (3/6- 3/10). Thank you to Mrs. Phelan and Mrs. Geno! We are grateful for the work this entire team does to support all of our MMS students every day.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Grantham and Mrs. Troiano

News from MMS Band

Big picture
On Friday, February 10th, all clarinet players in the band were treated to a master class with professional clarinet player, Maria Wagner. Ms. Wagner was able to show very specific tricks and tips that apply only to playing the clarinet. The improvement in many of the students was immediate. Even Mr. Laciano improved his playing!
March 23, 6:30 p.m. is the ALL-DISTRICT Band Festival, held at MMS. This event will include every band member from 5th- 12th grade. We have not held this concert since March of 2019! It is a great way to encourage our 5th and 8th graders to take the next step in their band education as well as celebrating National Music in Our Schools Month. More information is to come!

Updates from Student Council

It's wonderful to see students and community members coming together to support those in need and show appreciation for the hard work of others. Donating to the York County Shelter and Pantry is a great way to help provide food and other necessities for those who need it and the RSU57 School Community, the Waterboro Eagles, and Hannaford all contributed to the effort. (Check out some photos below of our end of food drive celebration!)

Showing appreciation for the Custodial Staff is also very important, as they often work behind the scenes to keep schools and other facilities clean and safe for everyone. It's great that the MMS Student Council Members are recognizing the hard work of these individuals and taking steps to support them. Whether through a kind word, gesture, or a more tangible form of support, showing gratitude can significantly make someone feel valued and appreciated.

Allagash Wabanaki Snow Snakes

Team Allagash students took part in an interdisciplinary unit to learn about Maine Native Americans and the traditional game of snow snake. Students teamed up to create and decorate their snow snakes, then put them to the test during our celebratory snow snake competition.
