BOISE HIGH INSIGHTS
2nd Quarter 2016-2017
From the Desk of Robb Thompson - Principal
Dear Boise High Families –
I hope this letter finds you well. It is hard to believe that we are already quickly approaching the winter holiday break. This is such a busy time of year in our school lives, with a multitude of concerts, productions, athletic events and school projects. I am happy to announce that one of Boise High’s long standing holiday traditions, the Capitol Rotunda Christmas Concert, will be happening again this school year. This year’s concert will take place on Tuesday, December 20th at 6 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. If you’ve never attended this concert, I hope you have the opportunity this year. The Boise High School Choir and Orchestra have put together a combined program that is second to none.
I also want to remind you all that Wednesday, December 21st is an early release day and not a late start. Please see the schedule for this day, which is included at the bottom of this newsletter. This will also be the day of the Sophomore Class Officer Elections, which proves to be an exciting event every year.
Many of you may have heard that the Boise School District is holding a bond election on March 14th, 2017. In November of 2017, the Boise School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to move forward with a $172-million-dollar school bond. The goal of this bond is to invest money in every school building facility in the Boise School District. For a more detailed explanation of the upcoming bond election, please see the Boise School District 2017 Bond Webpage. The Board of Trustees’ decision to move forward with the bond measure is the result of many months of facilities audits and community meetings, which culminated in a 10-year facility master plan.
If this bond should pass, which requires a super-majority (66.7%), every school in the District will have some plant needs addressed. Here is how this will directly impact Boise High School:
- The existing old gym will have a full remodel from top to bottom. As a result of this remodel, the old gym will be converted back in to our primary competition space, complete with a regulation basketball and volleyball courts and a seating capacity of just over 1800. There will also be a weight room, wrestling room, equal male and female locker rooms for PE and athletics, equipment storage, a training room, a multi-purpose classroom/team meeting room, coach’s offices and many other upgrades that will bring the facility standard to the same level of the teaching and learning that takes place in the existing facility.
-The existing music building will also have an extensive remodel. A second floor will be added, the existing lobby will be expanded to include a box office and concession stand, as well as provide access to both the music building and the newly remodeled gym. The micro-theater will be relocated from the main building to the new Performing Arts Center and will adjoin a new Drama classroom. Additionally, there will be separate spaces for the Choir, Band, Orchestra, Guitar and Piano programs. The building will be complete with new practice rooms, instructor offices, elevators, mechanical systems and complete ADA accessibility.
This is a very large project that preserves the existing structures (some of the oldest on our campus) while bringing them to current educational standards. It comes with a cost in the neighborhood of $15 million, one of the largest in the master plan. In addition to the above mentioned projects, there will also be some deferred maintenance funds of about $2.5 million to pay for the painting of the exterior of the main building, upgrades to the existing HVAC systems on campus, and new flooring as needed in various locations. More information regarding the bond election will be available in the coming weeks. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or would like additional information.
I hope you find this newsletter informative. It is certainly our goal to keep you informed regarding the many wonderful things taking place in our classrooms and community at Boise High School. I wish each of you a joyous holiday season with health and happiness for 2017. Thank you for your continued support of Boise High School. I look forward to seeing you at school or one of the many athletic and activity events in the coming weeks.
Take Care –
Robb Thompson

**PTL - Permission to Leave - it is very important that you give the attendance office at least one hour notice prior to the student receiving their PTL . Some classes go off campus for class time or they are testing, so please keep this in mind when asking for your student to be released with a PTL.
Also students do not necessarily receive their PTL's when you call in. We send the PTL to their class for release during that specific class period, this lessens the chance of the PTL being lost or misplaced.
Students must check out at the attendance office when they receive their PTL (which must be signed by an administrator at that time), and check in when they return.

OCTOBER - Student of the Month!
is October's B.E.N. & Character Ed Student of the Month!
Seth is well respected by his teachers and his peers. He is respectful to everyone and demonstrates compassion and integrity as a student at Boise High. One way he demonstrated this was by turning in a missing wallet that had a large amount of cash in it. This was one small gesture that was noticed and appreciated by staff, but Seth contributes to Boise High by being himself: considerate, friendly, and kind.
NOVEMBER - Student of the Month!
is November's B.E.N. & Character Ed Student of the Month!
Mohammad (Haitham) Yussuf: Haitham is quick to say hello to everyone, shake hands and engage in good conversation. He contributes to Boise High by welcoming others and making people feel acknowledged and cared for. Haitham is appreciated by staff and students alike for his outgoing presence at Boise High.
DECEMBER - Student of the Month!
is December's B.E.N. & Character Ed Student of the Month!
Ella is one of the most empathetic student at Boise High. She truly cares about all people, and is genuinely concerned when she observes someone having a "bad day." She consistently displays dedication to her studies, passion for making the world a better place (for both people and nature), resolve in identifying and implementing workable solutions to pressing community problems. Ella is a strong peer leader. She forms study groups and keeps the members motivated and on task.
She has a cheerful "let's do this" attitude before a test. She is not afraid to ask questions or for help and takes whatever means necessary to comprehend the course material to the best of her ability.
BRAVE SPORTS!!
We are having much success in our athletic endeavors this winter. The Lady Braves basketball team is doing very well and is 8-0 at this time. The Braves basketball team has started off strong as well, and just returned from a trip over to Eastern Idaho. They currently have a 5-1 record.
The Wrestling team did a wonderful job at the Bucks Bags Invitational and went 5-1 in that tourney. They have two more tourneys before Christmas break. The Hockey team is also competing very well. We are currently doing some raffles for food, tires, ski tickets, hockey tickets and hotel accommodations, and will be doing more before the end of the season, so remember to pick up some raffle tickets at the games!
Our Lady Braves PINK ZONE game is January 13th -see the article below to help out this great cause!

LADY BRAVES PINK ZONE!
Our Lady Braves basketball team has hosted a very special event on a yearly basis to support our local Boise chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We hold a "PINK ZONE" night, deck out the gym, fans, players, and referees in pink and raffle off a bunch of donated items to raise money for this great cause. In our first year we raised approximately $600. Last year our raffle raised over $2,270, and in this, our 9th year, we hope to set the bar even higher.
Every year ALL money raised goes directly to the Boise chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Tickets for our raffle are sold at both boys and girls games leading up to the event and businesses who donate items or gift cards are advertised as we sell the tickets and again the night of the big celebration. Simplot is sponsoring us by providing 350 shirts for the event. Shirts will be $5 each which will be a direct donation to Susan G. Komen.
Our PINK ZONE night is happening on Friday, January 13th at our home game against the Columbia Wild Cats and we hope to pack the gym with PINK!
Miss Idaho Teen - 2017
Gabriella "Bella" Simpson is a senior at Boise High School. She plays coed soccer, and volunteers much of her time for organizations around Boise. These include the Idaho Humane Society, Idaho Food Bank, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and many others. While balancing school, sports, and volunteering, Simpson plans to attend college in the fall and subsequently attend law school. Simpson is a very family oriented and people friendly person who looks forward to representing Idaho.

When will it be held?
We will sell tickets throughout the entire winter sports season. The drawing will be held during halftime the last boys' varsity home game on Saturday, February 9, 2017! You must be present to win!!
What is it?
This quilt is a custom, hand-made, twin-size quilt created by Eileen Gardiner. She pieced it together using t-shirts from each Boise High Athletic program. Eileen’s sons graduated from Boise High and were both active in athletics. She enjoys making quilts very much, and as you can see, does great work. Her contact information is available for anyone interested in having a custom quilt made.
What does it cost?
Tickets are $5 each, and there is no limit on how many can be purchased per person. The goal is to sell 200 tickets before the drawing date. It would make a great Christmas or Graduation gift! Cash or checks are accepted. Please make checks out to Boise High School.
How do I get tickets?
Tickets can be purchased from Nikki Clark Vega mailto:nikki.clark@boiseschools.orgor Carissa Kane mailto:carissa.kane@boiseschools.org at Boise High School either directly, or via email. You can also purchase them from the Sports Medicine Students. A table will also be set up at all home basketball games and wrestling matches. So come on out and watch a game and buy a ticket for this beautiful quilt!
What does this fundraising support?
100% of all of the proceeds go toward the Boise High Sports Medicine fundraising account. The money is used to purchase and maintain supplies and equipment for the athletes at Boise High to use in the Athletic Treatment Facility. Boise High has a long-standing tradition of being able to provide quality health care and injury rehabilitation to athletes in all sanctioned sports. This is a constantly evolving process, and needs change from year to year, based on demands. Having a solid financial base will allow us to be able to continue to provide quality care to all of our present and future Braves.
On behalf of all of us in the Boise High Sports Medicine Department, we thank you for your support! GO BRAVES!

What's Happening in our Community?
Dear Community Partner,
The health and safety of pedestrians is a top priority at St. Luke’s, which is why we’re notifying you of sidewalk closures at the construction site of the new Children’s Pavilion, a specialty health center that will house outpatient pediatric services. We expect the affected sidewalks will remain closed through late 2018.
Along Avenue C, sidewalk users will be rerouted to the east side of Avenue C, along Pioneer Cemetery. On Jefferson Street, sidewalk users will be diverted to the north side of Jefferson, near St. Luke’s Jefferson Medical Office Plaza.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at mailto:mcleodt@slhs.org or 381-1864.
