Stay on Target - 3 weeks to go!
What would CHS do?
I want to jump out there and say thank you to the data team that meets every week. The focus of this group has always been on students and their success. They are constantly looking for and discussing ways to improve a students academic and social emotional well being. I can't thank them enough for their tireless focus on how to support the students here at CHS. This week prior to our Grade Level Intervention meeting they reviewed the need to focus on how to take action on supporting students who struggle. They focused on how strong this school is and how caring each staff member is. The basic sentiment that we share with each other constantly is that 'We are CHS and these are our kids'. We hold in high regard the potential of every student. We are exceptional professionals and our actions are going to positively affect kids today (not when we get around to it). I so appreciate the team taking this action oriented approach.
In The Know
Last Day of School for Teachers is Monday June 18th - Teachers are contracted to work June 18th to complete grading and check out procedures. If this presents a conflict please see me at soon as you are able. Professional obligation as well as a courtesy to retiring staff.
Building 4J’s Future: Share your input on potential school bond measure - The Eugene School District 4J school board is considering a potential bond measure in November 2018 to improve school buildings and learning materials. The bond measure would build new school buildings and make other improvements in security, equity, technology, curriculum and more. Most of 4J’s school buildings were constructed in the 1940s to 1960s, and some are even older. Other capital improvements are needed due to changing enrollment, educational program needs and aging buildings and materials.
The school board wants to hear from community members about their views before making decisions in June. Please take a few minutes between now and May 30 to share your feedback in a community input form at www.surveymonkey.com/r/4Jbondsurvey2. Your input is important.
Parents and community members also are invited to learn more about the potential bond measure under discussion and talk with school board members and district staff at a community forum on Wednesday, May 30, at 7 p.m., at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St. Spanish interpretation will be provided.
TalentEd - Please make sure you sign into TalentEd and sign your forms as we end the school year. The signatures that we share back and forth can sometimes get lost in the mix. Please make sure that you check in and sign of on those forms.

ACE Award Nominees - I would like to acknowledge the ACE Award Nominees who were recognized at our ACE Awards here at Churchill Wednesday evening. The evening was a big hit for our local nominees and award winners. Churchill put on a spectacular event with poise and represented well. There were so many compliments on what a great school this is and what a great evening it was. Thanks go out to Jacob Steinberger and Chris Mudd for providing the beautiful music before and during the event. Your organization and busy schedules have been put to the test this Spring. We appreciate your hard work. Most importantly our nominees were appropriately nominated and recognized during the ceremony. In fact CHS had a strong contingent of nominees. Many heartfelt congratulations go out to Ian Ogden, Chris Mudd, Tiny Galago, Lynne Given, and Keith Fjordbeck for representing Churchill so well. I woudl also like to recognize one of our Churchill Family members, BJ Blake for her recognition as well. Once a Lancer, always a Lancer. Congratulations to all. You represented Churchill honorably and we are immensely proud of you.
Keith Fjordbeck, Lead Custodian, Churchill High School
“Keith always responds quickly to any type of need, is so resourceful and helpful with trouble-shooting, and does it all with a pleasant attitude and a smile. He’s polite, humble and very helpful. What Keith does every day directly impacts students’ learning experience, keeping their school safe, clean and healthy. Couldn’t do it without him.“
Tiny Galago, Student Supervision Assistant, Churchill High School
“Tiny started the Pacific Islanders Student Union at Churchill High School. The club has strengthened the Pacific Islander community in Eugene and the surrounding community. The values and character building that Tiny aims to instill in the Pacific Islander students is evident on their smiling faces every day at school.”
Lynne Given, School Secretary, International High School at Churchill
“Not only is Lynne just an awesome person to be around, she is also so well organized and able to keep track of hundreds of students’ schedules and information so that she can help them be a successful student. Lynne is always there for you with a helping hand and a smile on her face. Even if we thank her every day, it’s not enough. She is truly something special, and we couldn’t do it without her.”
Chris Mudd, Music Teacher, Churchill High School
“It is said that ‘the proof is in the pudding’ and in this case the pudding is a combination of Chris’s daily classes, band concerts, pep band for athletics, music technology classes and after school productions. In each case his students clearly perform at high levels and they walk away with a sense of satisfaction from a job well done. The man is a machine!”
Ian Ogden, Language Arts Teacher, Churchill High School
“Ian Ogden is not just a teacher, he’s the head of an AVID family that
is graduating after four years of his leadership, encouragement and unflagging commitment. He turned a bunch of kids, all with life and family challenges, into a group of comrades who will attend college, and always support each other.”
and a special shout out to our BJ Blake...
BJ Blake, Secondary Director, Instructional Department
“There is no one quite like BJ Blake. She is truly unforgettable and leaves a lasting impact on everyone she meets. She is devoted to building strong relationships and working collaboratively with colleagues, parents and the community; supporting rigorous and dynamic instructional programs; and always striving to provide outstanding educational experiences for all of our students. She does all of this with humor and humility, and brings out the best in all of us.”
Engineering Capstone - Congratulations to Marty Wilder and his students for their hard work in preparing their Engineering Capstone projects , which are real world prototypes that students present to a panel of industry professionals.
The students’ projects included some rather dynamic presentations such as:
- Mobile makerspace on wheels
- Redesigned crutch
- Submersible stream monitoring system
- Mobile battery charging station for portable power tools and robots
- Go-kart made from a lawn mower
- Machine to train dogs not to bark when their owner is away
Thank you Marty for your deliberate and thoughtful teaching of these students. You have genuinely provided them with real-life design and presentation experiences.
Don Squires - Don is so awesome! He is an IEP all-star! Don has come to large number of Project Success IEP meetings this year, and usually without any sort of extra prompting or coaxing. And he doesn't come to simply speak his piece, sign a paper, and then head out...he sticks around to hear about student present levels, transition plans, etc., offers valuable input and general ed perspective as the team discusses and develops measurable IEP goals, the whole shebang! Don is a model IEP teammate, and his presence at meetings all year long has been supportive for not only the individuals he teaches in his classes, but it helps support case managers and the PS program as whole.
