2nd Grade News
November 4, 2016
Welcome to Second Grade News!
Second Grade News (SGN) is a semi- monthly, grade level newsletter. Within in SGN, you and your second grader will be able to read about curriculum, unit study, and upcoming events. Second grade teachers are developing a grade level Canvas course that will be generic to the grade level. Additionally, each teacher will have their own class button specific to their class. We hope to have this Canvas accessible course published, and operational in the near future. In an effort to go green and reduce paper, future issues of SGN will be published in Canvas. If your family prefers a hard copy, please contact your teacher and we’ll make accommodations.
Homework:
Each second grader has their own yellow "Bring Everything, Everyday" folder that will come home most afternoons and needs to be returned the next day. This "official" folder will contain the word study and handwriting practice for the week, as well as math homework. Please note, there is no spelling test in second grade. Homework to be returned will be on the "Right Back to School" side. Miscellaneous papers will be on the "Left at Home" side.
We encourage you to promote reading within your home. Reading to, with, and listening to your child read will build fluency and instill confidence. Please log reading time and return the calendar at the end of the month.

Curriculum
Curriculum Corner:
In Reader's Workshop, leveled groups are in place and young readers are honing their comprehension skills, e.g. making connections, visualizing, questioning, inferencing, and summarizing. These skills are utilized throughout each trans-disciplinary unit. Non-fiction text is an integral component of our inquiry based curriculum. Don't forget to read human interest as well as age appropriate news articles to, and with your child. Interesting discussions await you when you share newsworthy text - enhancing learning by making it relevant, personal, and engaging.
In Writer's Workshop, young authors are sharpening skills previously learned and developing the skills to make their writing interesting and captivating.
Mathematicians are building place value skills up to three two digit numbers in addition and subtraction with regrouping. Honing the regrouping concept is on-going (work on regrouping skills at home for building confidence). Don't forget to practice math fluency, e.g. adding and subtracting to 20.
