what is Anzac day?

Anzac day goes beyond the annniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember Australian solders that served and died in all of the wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice.

History

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 13 years. The new national government war eager to establish its reputation among of the world. Australia and new Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition in 1915.



The 25 of april was officially named anzac day in 1916. It was marked by a wide variety of ceremonies and services in Australia.



Australians recognise 25/4 as an occasion of national rememberbrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held at dawn- the time of the landing of soldiers across the nation.

During World War One, the friends and families of soldiers and community groups sent food to the fighting men. Due to the time delays in getting food items to the front lines, they had to send food that would remain edible, without refrigeration, for long periods of time that retained high nutritional value; the Anzac biscuit met this need.
