2016 TDOE Essay Contest

Every year, the TDOE hosts an essay contest to honor talented teachers through student voices. This year’s contest celebrates how great teachers inspire their students daily with the prompt: "My teacher has inspired me to …" All Tennessee public school students in grades kindergarten through twelve are eligible to participate. The complexity of the essay will vary by age; K–2 students should record their thoughts on video. One winner will be selected from each of the following grade bands: K–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12, and the winning students and honored teachers will be celebrated during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-6.

All submissions must be received by the Tennessee Department of Education office by 5 p.m. CDT on Friday, April 8.

Contact Educator.Communications@tn.gov if you have questions.

Teacher Feature: Teddy Faxon

Mr. Faxon served in the United States Navy as a nuclear power plant operator. He is a wonderful father to two adorably intelligent children, Emma and Connor; he is also a husband to another teacher, Alicia. In his free time, Mr. Faxon enjoys playing video games (even without his kids) , and when he is not busy working on his garden, he enjoys caring for his bees and chickens. Mr. Faxon has been teaching mathematics since 2010. He is an valuable asset to the D-B EXCEL family.

Easy Beef Enchiladas Recipe

1 lb. ground beef w/taco seasoning
1 can diced green chilies
1 can enchilada sauce (I used red mild)
Cheddar cheese, shredded
1 can of Rotel

Preheat oven to 400. Spray a 9x13 with Pam. Brown ground beef w/taco seasoning; drain. Add diced green chilies and Rotel. Stir well. Lay tortilla flat and spoon some of the beef mix into it. Roll up tortilla and place, seam side down in pan. Pour enchilada sauce on top and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Bake for 10 minutes. I was able to get 8 big enchiladas out of this recipe...plenty for dinner and leftovers the next day.
