Physical Education Update
The year is almost over, but classes are still engaged and having fun while being active!
Personal Fitness & Wellness: As the semester wraps up, students are exploring skill-related components of fitness. Students have had the opportunity to run through agility ladder drills, learn some juggling techniques, and jump rope. Students are exploring how to incorporate these skill components into their personal fitness workouts to improve their overall performance, while the health-related components work to improve their overall physical health. Before the semester ends, students will re-visit their SMART Goals and design a plan to ensure they are able to continue progress on their goals once the semester concludes.
Net/Wall & Team Sports: This semester, students have been engaging in various activities. Our classes just completed the volleyball unit. Students learned and practiced all of the necessary skills to participate in and prepare for gameplay. This included practicing bumping, setting, serving, blocking, and spiking. Some of the content knowledge learned in this unit included scoring, boundaries, rotations, and gameplay rules. This was a highly engaging unit for our students.
Moving forward, we are entering our tennis unit. We will be traveling to Victory field to use the varsity tennis courts for class. Students will learn and practice all of the necessary skills/content knowledge to participate in tennis gameplay. The goal of this unit is to give students the fundamental skills and knowledge to participate in tennis for the rest of their lives.
Health Update
Students are currently working through our Substance Abuse unit, where they have been exploring the short/long term effects of a variety of different substances (tobacco/nicotine products, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit substances). During this time, our school resource officer (Officer Kelly) was able to attend classes and provide supplemental information behind the dangers of substance abuse. Students have also explored various treatment options for people struggling with addiction.
To wrap up the semester, students will be engaged in information related to Human Sexuality, followed by Nutrition. Prior to the Human Sexuality unit, parents/guardians will be notified with a detailed outline of the topics to be discussed within the unit and encouraged to reach out if there are any questions related to any of the discussion topics. Within the final unit of the school year, students will explore various elements related to nutrition, including information related to our current food guidance system, MyPlate. Students will be engaged in discussions around the importance of nutrition when aiming to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Wellness Tip
As summer and warmer weather approach make time to get outside. By getting outside you are able to soak up the vitamin D you need from the sun, disconnect from technology, and improve your overall happiness.
Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water!
Health Tip
May is Mental Health Awareness month! In recent years, particularly surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of caring for our mental health has been a major topic of conversation. Over time, the “stigma” around mental health has seemed to reduce and more people have grown more comfortable with discussing topics related to mental health. Prominent figures such as Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka, amongst others, have been extremely influential in speaking up about mental health.
To learn more about mental health awareness, below is a resource from Mental Health America outlining the roots of Mental Health Awareness month.
Workout Challenge
With the price of gas on the rise, now is the time to dust off your bicycle! Biking places will help your overall health and wellness.
Share your family experience with the biking around town, rather than always hopping in the car on Instagram by tagging us @WatertownPhysEd.
