What's Splashing
Burlington County Special Services School District
October 2016
There has been one month of Aquatics classes of the 2016-2017 school year. During that month flutter kicking with a kickboard is the first building block being worked on for the freestyle stroke with timed breathing. We have been practicing kicking with two different activities. One is kicking with a kickboard and the other is kicking in the glide position. It is important that any corrections are made early on so that the correct way of kicking is embedded into muscle memory. Students are doing a great job with making the corrections needed!
Safety around the pool is always the most important priority so it is important that students are always practicing safety techniques. One way safety is being practiced is by climbing out using the technique elbow-elbow-belly-knee-knee. Students are then putting their feet on the edge and jumping in feet first and swimming back to the wall by using scooping and kicking. It is important to practice this skill so if they were to fall into a pool they would know to get to the wall and 'take side" as fast as they can.
