4th Grade Visits Lake Erie Nature & Science Center
Our 4th grade students recently enjoyed a STEM based field trip to Lake Erie Nature and Science Center. They enjoyed some hands-on activity at the water table learning about how the Earth’s surface has specific characteristics and landforms that can be identified, how the surface of Earth changes due to weathering, and how the surface of Earth changes due to erosion and deposition.
They also were able to meet some of the center's animal ambassadors. The animal program provided our students with up-close encounters with a variety of animals, including mammals, reptiles and birds of prey. Our students then toured the Center’s indoor exhibits and observed live animals in the Center’s Wildlife Gardens.
They were able to end this trip in the planetarium with a guided trip through the solar system. Experts in the planetarium guided our students and helped them to explore the planets in detail. Our students helped compare and contrast objects with Earth to discover Earth’s unique qualities. They learned all about the objects in our solar system and it's place in the galaxy.

Freshman Class Visits The Cleveland Museum of Art
This month our Freshman class enjoyed a field trip to The Cleveland Museum of Art. This trip extended on what they have been learning about Ancient World Cultures. Cleveland Museum of Art's website boasts that 'Egyptian antiquities were the first works of art acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, even before there was a building to house them. Today the Egyptian collection is internationally recognized as one of the finest collections of its kind.' We are lucky to have access to exhibits like these for our students to learn from.
Student Council Gives Back to Our Lorain Community
This month, our Student Council hosted one of it's monthly awareness dress downs. January is Poverty Awareness Month and for $2 students could opt of of their uniform for the day and instead wear a white top and jeans. Normally Student Council uses the opportunity to raise awareness about something and uses the money to help with Student Council lead events. This time the club decided they wanted to give back to the community. They chose Second Harvest Food Bank in Lorain to donate the $200 to. Vice President of External Affairs, Susan Bartosch, came to Horizon Lorain to meet with Student Council Representatives Kennedy S., Teresa W., and Sha'Dymond C. The girls presented Susan with the check and she thanked them and spoke to them about different ways Second Harvest is able to provide meals to our community. Susan says their $200 donation will be able to provide 1,400 meals to our community.
