Compass Parent Workshop: Talking to Your Child about Race

Please join us for our first Compass Parent Workshop on Monday, March 23from 6:30-8:00 PM in the community room. Dr. Doris Chang, Associate Professor of Psychology at The New School and Oak Class Parent, will be leading this workshop on the topic of "Talking to your child about race."

Community Gathering: The Elm Class Will Share This Week

The Elm Class will share at Community Gathering this week. Please join us in the gym at 8:15am for our weekly ritual of gathering, singing, and sharing together. We hope to see you there!

Also, thanks so much to the Oak Class for sharing our first ever play at Community Gathering. It was so great to see the kindergarteners read a book and act it out in front of our entire school community!

Did You Fill Out the Annual DoE Survey?

Last week, Todd sent you all an email about this year's Parent Survey for the DoE. Please take the time to fill it out. We need 100% participation. You can fill the survey out online here: Check your email for your personal access code. You can also fill out the survey in the Main Office if you prefer. Our deadline is March 23. Thank you for your support.

Only 18 Days Left For Our Donors Choose Project!

Kirsten, our Sustainability Coordinator, has a great project on Donors Choose and it only has 18 days left until it will expire. If we don't raise ALL of the money, we will lose the money that was donated so far - $2,518.76! This project will outfit our Sustainability Studio, the awesome science-based class your child goes to four days a week. The proposal includes science materials, a classroom library filled with sustainability-focused books, and materials to add aquaponics to several places within our school. Please help if you can and share with your friends and family.

Scholastic Reading Club Order Was Placed

Thanks to all for ordering books from Scholastic Reading Club. The order was placed over the weekend and your books will arrive soon. Because so many families ordered books, we received lots of free books for our school! The books will be added to the Shared Library in the Community Room as well as the Classroom Libraries.

Help Stock The Compass Kitchen

The Compass kitchen is up and running! The Oak Class made French toast last week with Pascale's husband and both kindergarten classes will bake with Brooke this week or next week. We are still in need of a few more supplies for our cooking projects. Please let us know if you have anything to send our way or if you are able to purchase any of the needed supplies.

Compass Shirt And Sweatshirt Recycling

Has your child outgrown any of their Compass shirts or sweatshirts? We are accepting clean, gently-used Compass shirts and sweatshirts for reuse. Please donate your out grown shirts to bin in the Community Room. These will come in handy in case of accidents or on days when someone forgets to wear a Compass shirt.

Also, if you need some new Compass gear, the shop is open and we have an array of short sleeved t-shirts, long-sleeved t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies. Family Conferences Are On March 26th and 27th -

On Friday, your child's teachers sent a Doodle poll to sign up for conferences. Please sign up for your time as soon as possible. The teachers are looking forward to meeting with each of you. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your conference in order to read through your child's progress report.

Students will be dismissed at noon on March 26th and 27th to allow teachers to have time to meet with families.

YMCA Afterschool will run from noon until 6pm on March 26th and 27th.

We will also provide childcare for Compass students and siblings during Family Conferences. Please bring your child/children to the "Fun Zone" in the Community Room when you come for your meeting. A Compass staff person will be there to supervise.

Tea School Days

Thank you for participating in Tea Collection's School Days Program! We will receive 20% of the total sales using our promo code from March 9th-15th. Every little bit helps us to build our program!

News from the Family School Collaborative

The Family School Collaborative is our Compass parent group. It's much like a PTA at other schools. The FSC meets monthly at our school and has four co-chairs (2 parents and 2 staff members). If you would like to join this parent group, please join us for our next meeting.

Compass School Pictures are available for purchase through the end of March! Instructions for purchasing your child's school pictures on Smugmug were sent home via e-mail and hard copy.

Snack Prep Duties

Thanks to everyone who has helped with snack prep so far! Looking ahead to March, please let us know if there are any times you are free to help out by signing up here If you can’t or don’t want to sign up online please email directly.

We need volunteers Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Starting around 1:15 in the Community Room, prepping and delivering snack takes less than 1/2 hour, and if you can stay a little longer to help wash the plates that’s a bonus. We appreciate your help!

Here's how it works in 3 easy steps:

3. Sign up! Choose your spots - VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!


In order to provide snack to our students each day, we need to collect Snack Dues from each family once a month. The average cost of snack for each child is $10 a month. We ask that you contribute what you can, between $5 and $20 a month. If you are able to sponsor the cost of snack for another child, we would greatly appreciate it.

How to Send Snack Dues

Electronic Way to Send Snack Dues: Square Cash (click on the left side of the webpage for a short video on how it works and enter your cell phone on the right to get a text giving you $1 and a link to get started. Must have a debit card). After you get the text, all you need to do is enter your debit card information, download the app and type your email address. You are now ready to make and receive payments. To send Compass money, press "Send", select an amount and send the money to Todd's email address (

If you would like to know how you can set up a recurring, monthly payment from your Citibank or Chase account, email Todd.

Non-electronic way to send Snack Dues: If you are not able to use Square Cash or are not comfortable using an electronic system, please send cash or a check (Made to Compass Charter School) in an envelope with your child's name and Snack Dues on the front.

One last note:
When using Square Cash or a check, please note for which month(s), i.e. “March Snack Dues" in the memo for our record keeping purposes.
