'Let us take one day only in hands at a time. Resolve to do good today and better tomorrow.' - Catherine McAuley
Dear whānau,
Plenty of cool stuff has been happening around the place again this week and you can read all about it below.
Coming up ...
Tomorrow is Armistice Day. Here is a wee bit of info about it if it's something you don't know much about.
Armistice Day is commemorated all around the world on the 11th of November each year to mark the Armistice signed between the Allies of World War 1 and the enemy, Germany, in Compiègne, France. The Armistice marked the end of WW1. It was signed at 5:45am (french time) and the ceasing of hostilities took effect at 11am that morning - the ‘eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month’ of 1918.
The Allies of WW1 included France, Great Britain (including New Zealand and Australia), Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States. This Armistice Day we are going to the Gore RSA to spend some time with some local 'modern day' Veterans and Servicemen, Corporal Aaron Horrell, Lieutenant Bradley Bridgman and Michael (Stretch) O’Neill QSM. Then we are going to the Cenotaph for the 104th Armistice Day ceremony to sing the National Anthem proudly. Flynn Walsh and Moss Wilson have the honor of reading some prayers alongside the Padre, Reverend Bruce Cavanagh.
You are more than welcome to join us at the RSA at 10am or over at the Cenotaph for the 11am service, if you can't make it but you want to acknowledge it, when you hear the fire siren start, you could take a moment to reflect and be grateful for the men and women who have served and continue to serve to keep our country free.
From the 3rd verse of our National Anthem
Peace, not war, shall be our boast,
But, should foes assail our coast,
Make us then a mighty host,
God defend our free land.
Lord of battles in Thy might,
Put our enemies to flight,
Let our cause be just and right,
God defend New Zealand.
'They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them
Please remember, if you have something you'd like us to celebrate in the newsletter, send me through a picture and a wee blurb by Thursday 9am each week and I'll make sure it gets in - mallory.hood@stmarys.school.nz
God bless you all.

Save the date - 1st December
On Thursday December 1st we are having a special afternoon of celebrations.
From 12.30 - 1.40pm we will be having a shared lunch (byo), this is also a time where your kids can take you around our classrooms and show you the cool stuff they've been doing for our inquiry topic, Tūrangawaewae
At 1.45pm we will head over to the Church to celebrate Mass together, as this is part of our culture and special character at St Mary's. This Mass will be like no other that we have had before, it will be a Mass celebrated in many languages, with songs and sharing, embracing all the fantastic cultures we have as part of our St Mary's School community. We'd love you to join us for all of the afternoons events, or even part of it ... but of course, if you can't make it, we'll always have pictures on Facebook afterwards.

Time Capsules
Each class created their own board with their names and pictures on it for future generations who come through St Mary's School to discover. The building work is going well and as you can see it's starting to look like a classroom.
Sponsorship Opportunity ...
Sarah Cormack is our incredibly flexible, enthusiastic and encouraging Sports Activator for Eastern Southland. We have Sarah at our school every 3 weeks and she works with all of our children at least once, if not twice during the one and a half days she spends here. She helps at our school events when needed e.g. Cross Country and Athletics and also at Eastern events. She is a real taonga and asset to our community. The Eastern Southland Sports Activator Committee are responsible for getting sponsorship to ensure this is an ongoing role and ongoing asset for our kids. If you think your business could potentially help out on this front, we'd welcome your sposonship. Sponsorship is advertised.
Email me: mallory.hood@stmarys.school.nz if you'd like more information.

Looking for a way to give back to our Church?
Joell Pearce who organises the Church cleaning roster is currently on the look out for some more people to help out. At the moment, you'd only have to do it once every two months (and it isn't the whole Church) but the more people we get to help, the less often you'd have to do it. Some of our staff already help and some have signed up, we also have families that already help too. This is very much appreciated. If you're not into getting up and reading in front of others or greeting at the door, this is a low pressure way of giving back. If you're interested, let me know and I'll pass your details on.
Book Clubs issue 7 and 8 have been sent home - last day to order through school is 1st December
Book Fair Success
Last week we held our Scholastic Book Fair. Judy is stoked to announce that, with your support, we sold $2,473 worth of books and accessories. We were rewarded for this by the lovely people of Scholastic by being gifted $742 of books for the library. Judy, with the help of some of our students, chose 57 new books for our library. How cool is that?
