Term 2, Week 8, Tuesday 21 June 2022
Coming up...
We are so excited about our very first Matariki celebration and breakfast on Thursday morning. Those families who have confirmed attendance will have received an email with key information from me yesterday. We will have a coffee van at school from 7.30am after returning from our hikoi up Maungawhau to welcome Matariki back to our skies at 7.00am.
It is wonderful to have our Kapa Haka group performing twice this week as the community celebrates Matariki. They have been invited to Epsom Village, Ranfurly Road to perform on Wednesday and then at the Epsom library on Thursday. I am very appreciative of the work Gaylene Hewlett and Anusha Chebbi have done with our students.
We hope you have enjoyed reading the learning posts from your children over the weekend. If you have not done so yet, please do take the time to sit and read through what has been shared and to celebrate the goals that have been mastered – remember each time a goal is mastered the level dial is updated. We are in the process of confirming the achievement levels; these will go live at the end of the term when we share the next learning post. Three Way Learning Conferences have been scheduled for Tuesday 2nd August (via ZOOM) and Thursday 4th August (at school). Details for those will come out closer to the time.
It was exciting to see our students compete in the Year 5 and 6 zone cross country run this morning; another ‘normal’ school event to take place which is so good. Well done to all those students for their hard work and for representing the school with such determination.
Matariki celebrations are for spending time with family and whanau. It is also a time to remember those who have passed, to celebrate the present and to make goals for the year ahead. Te Papa has a few ideas of things you can try … How to celebrate Te Papa
The last two weeks of term look to be busy – enjoy the long weekend. – Alison
Intermediate open evening tonight
Are you starting to think about where your Year 6 student will be going for Year 7 & 8? Come to the open evening tonight, Tuesday 21 June at 6:30pm in Room 15 to find out more about intermediate education at Kohia. If you have friends who are interested, send them along too. We usually open a few balloted places, depending on numbers. Please wear a mask – thanks.
Board of Trustees Meeting
As you will be aware, the Board of Trustees elections will take place in September. If you are considering standing and would like to find out more about what happens, you are invited to attend our next meeting Wednesday 29th June at 6.00pm. At this stage we hope to hold a face to face meeting but this will be confirmed. If you would like to attend, please email alison@kts.school.nz. We look forward to welcoming you.
Book Week
Book Week is coming up in Week 10, on 4–8 July, with some exciting events planned.
Author visits on Tuesday 5th July:
Koru – Jo van Dam, author of 'T is for Tuatara' and other picture books
Harakeke & Pohutukawa – Joanna Grochowicz, author of 'Shackleton's Endurance' and books on Scott and Amudsen's Antarctic Expeditions.
Other activities include a competition for Year 4–8 (see poster below) and a Scavenger Hunt for Year 1–3.
The week culminates in our traditional Book Week Character Parade on the Friday morning (last day of term). Students can be creative and put their costumes together with things from home. You do not need to buy an expensive costume. If the weather is fine the whole school parades through Mt Eden Village which is always exciting.
