Semester 2 -- Dare to Connect

Welcome back, Eagles!

We hope you had a fantastic break and that you feel rested and recharged for the new semester. This time of year, we are focusing on course selection and planning for next year's courses. The 'Special Interests' section is dedicated to giving some more information about course selection and creating/maintaining Personal Graduation Plans (PGPs). Be sure to look at the information, and make sure you check out the 'Upcoming Events' section for information on parent presentations.

As we move into the new year, one of the most common wishes from people is that we could rebuild connections between people and come together in a meaningful way. So, this semester I want to challenge you to connect someone in a positive way. One small act of kindness can cause someone's day to turn around. Be the reason someone smiles and DARE TO CONNECT!

Have a great 3rd 9 weeks!

TSI Tuesdays

GHS is offering the TSI Accuplacer exam at least two Tuesdays per month during the academic year for students needing to meet these requirements. Visit this link for more information and to sign up.

The state of Texas requires all students to graduate from high school having met certain indicators demonstrating College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR). This aligns with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), which requires students planning to attend a public college or university in Texas to pass the TSI exam. By earning the required scores on the TSI Accuplacer exam, it ensures that students will be prepared to begin courses at a public institution without spending extra time and money on remedial courses if they are not needed.

Many students exempt the TSI with SAT or ACT scores.

  • 23 or higher on the ACT composite and a minimum score of 19 on both the English and Math tests

  • SAT Reading and Writing minimum score of 480 and Math score of 530 (no combined score needed)

How to Access More Information

More information regarding CCMR may be found on the GISD district website here, including Hot Topic videos covering subjects such as Applying for College, the FAFSA and TASFA applications, and Applying for Scholarships.

Graduation Requirements & Postsecondary Planning

The GHS Counseling Team went into classrooms last semester to talk about Career Planning. Some of the resources are linked in this newsletter, so make sure you check out the different videos along with the four-year planning template located in the resources section of this newsletter.

For graduation requirements, there is a screen in Skyward that shows the different requirements met through the career planning and completed courses. Below is a picture from the course guide with the graduation requirements for all high school students in the state of Texas.

**Please note that the only difference between the Foundation plus Endorsement plan and the Distinguished plan is Algebra 2.

Make sure that you and your family look over the different course options in the GISD Course Guide (

Counselors will be meeting one-on-one with students to go over course selections and career plans to ensure that students have planned for all graduation requirements with alignment to career goals in February. Counselors will not be meeting with students or parents regarding course selections before the one-on-one meetings in February.
