Quote of the Week
"I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do." ~Leonardo da Vinci
Labor of Love
“Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” (http://www.dol.gov/laborday/history.htm).
As educators, our contributions to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country are immense. We carry the responsibility of nurturing and preparing our future leaders, those who will make decisions that directly affect the well-being of our nation. We give of our time, understanding, and most importantly, our heart. Ours is not an easy profession, one in which we work from the start of our shift and stop at its conclusion. Contrary to popular belief, we do not have weekends and summers off; we spend those times preparing lessons and developing ourselves professionally so that we are fully apt to ensure that all students are capable, curious and confident learners. While monetary compensation is needed, we did not embark on this journey for riches, fame and glory; ours is a labor of love.
As you enjoy your much earned holiday weekend, celebrate the accomplishments we have achieved together here at Highcroft. Celebrate the amazing growth we saw in students’ reading levels last year and the growth that students made between Math Benchmark one and three and ELA Benchmark one and four. Hopefully you have seen and/or heard about some of our MAP results. Celebrate an increase in our overall ELA and math MPI scores from 2014 to 2015. We should celebrate that our students who are African-American, those identified as having an IEP and those who are identified as receiving free and reduced lunch all demonstrated growth with an increase in their overall ELA MPI scoring.
As you celebrate all of these achievements and more, know that they did not happen by chance. We only realize such feats because of your hard work and dedication. These successes are a direct result of your detailed planning and implementation of our district’s guaranteed curriculum, of your CLT collaboration and problem solving around focus students, of you monitoring interventions and trying multiple strategies to assist students. We have these victories because of your willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure that ALL students succeed.

Still Seeking - Help Wanted
In an effort to launch our before school tutoring program as soon as possible we are seeking tutors to assist our students. Tentatively, tutoring will occur Thursday and Friday mornings, from 8:00 to 8:45. We will again have small groups of three to five students, depending on the number of tutors we recruit. With a late September/early October start, we will be able to provide multiple tutoring sessions to assist more students than we were able to support last year. As a tutor, you will have the option of committing to one session or multiple sessions, and receive compensation for your time through extra duty pay. If you are interested in supporting a small group of learners before school, please email Cartelia.

We Are Family
This Friday, September 11th, we will meet with our family groups immediately following morning announcements. During this family meeting the focus continues to be on members getting to know one another. You will spend the majority of the time having students share about themselves by sharing their family album page and survey. With any remaining time you can select a team building activity of your own or one that was shared with you via email along with the family group lesson.
