Special Services Spotlight
Volume 1 - Issue 3
Special Education Week
As we've heard too many times, the last 14 months have been far from normal. Throughout the ever changing landscape of this public health emergency, our staff continued providing special education services to the greatest extent possible. Teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, couselors, and case managers have risen to the occasion and have made the best of an unfortunate sitution.
For that, we say THANK YOU!!
National School Nurse Day
As mentioned above, staff members throughout this school district have faced this challenge head-on to support not only our special education students, but all students and staff that attend and work in our schools. Facing a bigger challenge than, quite possibly, any other staff member in the district our school nurses deserve all of the recognition in the world. Since we reopened for in-person instruction in September, our nurses have spent countless hours, including nights and weekends, ensuring our buildings (and every person inside them) remained open and safe.
They have all remained in constant contact with building and district administration, teachers, and families. They have kept up-do-date with the latest NJ Department of Health and CDC guidance and have provided feedback and recommendations when necessary.
For their efforts, the district's school nurses were recognized as Staff Members of the Month at December's Board of Education Meeting. I can't thank them enough for their tireless dedication to the district and the students we serve.
The Wonderful World of Preschool!!
We currently run a preschool program for students with disabilities and an inclusion program for general education students. Our program consists of three types of classrooms: preschool disabilities, inclusion, and communication and learning support. In a typical school year, classes meet every day for either 2.5 hours or 4 hours based on individual needs. The 2.5 hour program has an AM and PM session.
Our preschool disabilities and communication and learning support classrooms serve special education students between the ages of 3 and 5. Parents who suspect their preschool-age child may have special needs may request more information by contacting the Special Services Office.
Our preschool team consists of a supervisor, 2 case managers, and 7 teachers:
- Mrs. Krakovsky - Supervisor
- Mrs. Morton - Case Manager, LDT-C
- Mrs. Ruff - Case Manager, Social Worker
- Mrs. Danziger - Teacher
- Ms. DePalma - Teacher
- Mrs. McCann - Teacher
- Mrs. Baldassare - Teacher
- Ms. McLeod - Teacher
- Ms. Bair - Teacher
- Ms. Vandegriff - Teacher
The inclusion program is a tuition-based preschool for general education students. The program serves general education students between the ages of 3 and 5. Our preschool program includes students of varying degrees of developmental readiness which optimizes opportunities for all students to grow and learn from one another in a school setting. Learning through play and theme-based activities is emphasized to promote opportunities for communication and social/emotional growth.
