ELA: Fairy Tale FUN

In Language Arts, we read and discussed five different versions of the story, Cinderella. The students had so much fun reading different versions of Cinderella from around the world! We compared and contrasted these stories based on the following story elements: plot, setting, characters, problem, solution, and central message or moral. It was so fun to see how each version was similar or different compared to the traditional story that the students were familiar with.

The students will have an opportunity to read and discuss various versions of the story, Little Red Riding Hood. We will be comparing each story, as we did with Cinderella, based on the same story elements.

Writing

Writer's Workshop

In writing, we published our first opinion piece! We have a wonderful bunch of young authors here in second grade! We are now focusing back to personal narratives. We reviewed that all narratives tell a story. We will take this piece of writing through the entire process. We will start with pre-writing (the use of a graphic organizer), and then onto rough drafts. From there, students will conference with their teachers and begin editing and revising. The final copies will be placed in a beautifully illustrated cover or onto to Book Creator. This writing will be saved and shared with you at Academic Night in the spring! What a celebration that will be!!

Math

In Math, we have continued working hard on double and triple digit addition and subtraction. Students have learned multiple strategies to subtract. It is amazing to see the students try each strategy and pick the one that works best for them! The students are truly becoming more and more confident each time we practice these challenging concepts! This week, we will jump into two-step subtraction story problems. Please encourage your child to continue practicing his/her subtraction in preparation for the Unit 4 assessment coming up soon.

Check out this great Math Antics video on multi-digit subtraction! It is a great tool for students to reference.
