Also, the Art teachers will be creating a Virtual Art Show - check out the flyer below. Finally, please don't hesitate to reach out to any of our staff or the PTO grade level representatives for support! Here is one of my favorite quotes by Helen Keller, "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much!"

Family Cultural Heritage Project Based Learning Opportunity
- Last week families were encouraged to choose a country and begin researching, reading and/or watching videos to learn more.
- This week families are encouraged to make recipes, crafts and flags, learn some words in the language and/or listen to music and take a “virtual visit” to the country you chose. Be sure to take pictures and save all of the information you gather for your project.

The Buzz from Ms. Blais ... Counselor's Corner
During this incredibly stressful time, there are many different ways you may be feeling, and I want to remind you that they are all okay. As parents and caretakers, you are under tremendous pressure. Remember to go easy on yourself and practice self-compassion by forgiving yourself for making mistakes, accepting that you won’t have all of the answers, and reminding yourself you’re doing your best. If you’re interested in additional support with juggling work and school with your child(ren) at home, I recommend checking out Parent Trapped, a new weekly parenting podcast by Common Sense Media. In addition, click on the following links for this week’s social-emotional activity ideas:
Spend time this month creating mindful moments for you, your child(ren), and your family with this May calendar.
Watch Why Do We Lose Control of Our Emotions? to learn how our brains work to recognize and manage our emotions.
Identify "Brain Breaks" for You and Your Child during a moment of calm.
Need a Chromebook?
- Please email Mrs. Bodkins abodkins@dedham.k12.ma.us to arrange to pick-up a Chromebook.
- Pick-up this week on Tuesday from 11-12 or Friday from 12:30-1:00.
Too much technology? We get it!
Taken alone, each one of these aspects of technology is positive, however when stacked back to back can become overwhelming to families and unhealthy for children. Our intent in making these resources available is to give parents and guardians materials needed. While we set expectations and suggested guidelines, we respect and encourage your parental judgement to make modifications or adjustments to provide alternative, meaningful learning experiences. Give yourself and your family permission to unplug from time to time!
Notes from the Nurse...
COVID-19
The CDC recently updated information about Keeping Children Healthy While School’s Out. It provides a good summary of the continued importance of hand washing, disinfecting surfaces at home, social distancing, wearing masks, and getting outdoors for some fun.
Seasonal Allergies
*Always work with a Primary Care Provider to determine if your child’s symptoms could be seasonal allergies, as some symptoms do overlap with those of the common cold, influenza, and COVID-19.
Seasonal Allergies (also called Hay Fever or Allergic Rhinitis) are believed to affect as many as 40% of U.S. Children. Seasonal allergies are caused by an overreaction of the immune system to certain allergens like pollen and mold spores. Symptoms usually start when airborne pollen from trees, grass, flowers, and weeds or mold spores enter the eyes, nose, and/or throat, setting off an allergic reaction.
Pollen spores are small, light, and dry so wind can carry them. Pollen counts tend to be higher on warm, dry, and windy days and generally highest in the morning. Mold spores thrive in damp, humid, and wet conditions.
Symptoms can include:
Runny nose (Rhinorrhea)
Sneezing
Congestion/stuffy nose
Coughing
Tiredness
Watery eyes
Itchiness
Headache
Wheezing
Shortness of breath
Tips to help alleviate allergy symptoms:
Keep the windows closed when pollen counts are high
Take a bath or shower and change clothes after coming in from hanging outdoors to rid the skin & hair of pollen buildup
Remove your shoes when coming from outside
Avoid rubbing your eyes and wash hands to clean off the pollen (and germs)
Wash bedding at least once every few weeks during high allergen time
If you have air conditioning, check to see if you can use a special HEPA air filter
A primary care provider can help you decide if allergy medications are needed to control symptoms. Some options include daily antihistamine medicine like loratadine or cetirizine as well as eye drops and nasal sprays.
Spring allergy season in our area can start as early as March with Tree pollen. Generally, Grass pollen begins in May, Weed pollen starts in July and Ragweed will arrive in August until the first frost. A seasonal allergy tracker like www.pollen.org will give you daily updates.
Please let me know at kduckworth@dedham.k12.ma.us if you need any medications your student has stored at the school.
NEW INFORMATION All residents 21 and under can get meals for FREE. Your child does not need to be present to pick up the meals.
