7th Grade Scoop
Melissa Middle School
The High School counselor forwarded our campus a scholarship opportunity for 7th graders. Check out this information and see if you or your child are interested in this:
We completed our second article about sharks and tested over it. We are beginning our study of TEXT STRUCTURE and how we can understand the author's purpose and their intended audience to enable our students to have a more accurate comprehension of the informational text they are reading. We will also be practicing with a variety of graphic organizers to be able to break down the information that is read. As a part of our TEXT STRUCTURE unit, our students will be using task cards on a daily basis to keep the text structure/graphic organizers ever in their minds!
Also as a part of their Informational Unit, they will be introduced to the NONFICTION SIGN POSTS which will be more tools to help them to have a better understanding of the informational texts that they read. Our goals are to make sure they are equipped with the necessary tools to be successful in every area of their learning and life!
Mrs. Webb's tutoring is on Tuesdays with a session before school and after school. Both sessions will continue through May 8 with the exception of Spring Break, Mar. 5-9. Students who have been invited will come to either the morning session or the afternoon session, whatever works best for their families.
Spring Break is coming up!!! It is the week of March 5-9. Hopefully, they'll get reading, resting, and relaxing taken care of during that time because when they come back they will have their Reading Benchmark on Thursday, March 15th!
Please remind your student that their homework for Reading class is to read 20-30 minutes a night. They won't be able to accomplish that without your help. Thank you for your support for your student and for our goals.
If your student is in one of Mrs. Webb's classes, you can join that class's Remind group.

The week before spring break we will begin Unit 8 which covers surface area and volume. Students will need to be able to access their STAAR Charts as we continue working with geometry. When we return from Spring break students will be taking their math benchmark and reviewing surface area and volume.
If you have any questions or concerns please email your child's teacher and we will get back with you quickly. Be sure to check out the 7th grade math website. The notes we take in class will be linked there.

Last week in Science we learned about biomes, biodiversity, sustainability, and ecosystems. Students began their group presentations over their biome on Friday. They will finish those up on Monday. We will learn about Texas Ecoregions and then end the week with our test over the ecology unit we have been studying.
When we return from Spring Break, we will learn about food chains, food webs, trophic levels, and energy pyramids.
We hope that everyone has a great break and comes back well rested.
Students are allowed to do corrections on all daily work, homework, and quizzes. We don't have many students taking advantage of that. Students that are consistently doing corrections on daily work are seeing huge improvements on their test scores, so it does help a lot. They can also do corrections and a re-take on all unit tests. Again, not many students are utilizing that opportunity.
Our tutoring times are as follows:
Coach Gabel: Mondays, Tuesdays (when there is no track meet), Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school and Fridays by arrangement.
Mrs. McKoy: Monday through Thursday before and after school and Fridays by arrangement.
Coach Whetzel: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays after school.
