7th Grade Scoop
Melissa Middle School
It's hard to believe our first semester is almost at an end. In our Reading classes, we finished our drama, "A Christmas Carol" and watched the movie version before we left for our break. We are now beginning our study of Informational Text. Our students will begin to understand text structure and features, author's purpose, and organizational patterns; analyze, make inferences, and draw conclusions about expository text. They will use different organizational patterns as guides for summarizing and forming an overview of expository text. They will also be able to recognize and explain the function of the graphical components of a text.
They will be reading two articles about sharks. One shark article will give them the opportunity to learn and label the graphical components, text structure, and features that are used in the organization of the article as well as understand the author's purpose for writing the article. The second article about sharks will give the students an opportunity to distinguish factual claims from commonplace assertions and opinions, recognize author's bias, and identify rhetorical fallacies in persuasive texts.
In Reading, our students hit the ground running after the break and will continue to stay the course with your help. Thank you for your support for your student and for our goals.

Welcome back after the Holiday break! We have begun a new unit over probability. The students seem to really enjoy this unit. Next week will take a break from Probability to wrap up the second nine weeks and we will be taking our nine weeks exam. The test will include information from first and second nine weeks. After exams we will continue our probability unit and begin looking at compound probability and making predictions and inferences. We will complete the probability unit on 1/29-1/30.
If you have any questions or concerns please email your child's teacher and we will get back with you quickly. Be sure to check out the 7th grade math website. The notes we take in class will be linked there.

We hope that you had a very restful break. We are excited to be back in school with the kids. It's hard to believe that the end of this semester is this week.
This week in Science the students will be getting their Middle-of-Year tests back. We will be setting up tutoring times for students who do not meet grade level on that test. We are beginning our unit on Genetics. Students will be able to define heredity as the passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next.
Students will learn how to do Punnett Squares, they'll do a Genetics Scavenger Hunt, and they'll get to produce their own "offspring" by flipping a coin to determine traits.
After Genetics, students will learn how to use a Dichotomous Key to determine the scientific names of different organisms.
Students are allowed to do corrections on all daily work, homework, and quizzes. We don't have many students taking advantage of that. Students that are consistently doing corrections on daily work are seeing huge improvements on their test scores, so it does help a lot. They can also do corrections and a re-take on all unit tests. Again, not many students are utilizing that opportunity.
Our tutoring times are as follows:
Coach Gabel: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school and Fridays by arrangement.
Mrs. McKoy: Monday through Thursday before and after school and Fridays by arrangement.
Coach Whetzel: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays after school.
