AR Alpha Delta Kappa Moving Forward
November 2021
From the State President
I hope everyone had a rewarding Founders’ Month. It was a great time for recruitment. Does anyone have new members? Charlene Lauria, IEB member from CN Alpha Chapter, presented a wonderful fraternity education slide show at our state wide Founders’ Day Event. We learned so much about our state Alpha Delta Kappa history. ZOOM allows us the freedom to reach out to our neighboring sisters in order to share valuable information.
As our Covid cases begin to dwindle again we will hopefully be able to return to normal this spring. Our State Convention will be April 2, 2022 at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Central Avenue in Hot Springs, Arkansas. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Courtyard Marriott for Friday and Saturday nights. Registration will be $25 which includes lunch. We will be sending out registration materials in January. Our theme is “Traveling Arkansas—Searching for Sisters.” More details to come!
Enjoy this beautiful fall and remember to take a few minutes for yourself each and every day.
Hugs to all, Kathey

About Our A∆K International Website:http://alphadeltakappa.org/
Christie Smith, Executive Director, has asked that chapter presidents send a list of members who have not been on the website in the last five years. This will help Headquarters reset passwords for these members. When initiating or reinstating a member online, the submit button sends the form to Headquarters. No other action is required.
It is my opinion that our website is becoming more user friendly and filled with useful information so please encourage our members to explore.

Diversity Committee Needs You
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
World Understanding
Greetings, South Central Sisters,
I’m Lucy Kubo (Texas Sigma), the new regional chairman for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as
well as for World Understanding (the two go hand-in-hand, in my opinion). I’m going to be
honest with you: recently I had an evening when I lost my usual sense of optimism, and felt very
down about the state of our society. The next day, I knew I had to shake that off and think of
what I, one simple retired school librarian, could do to make things better. I was listening to an
album by a favorite singer-songwriter when it hit me: begin with my Alpha Delta Kappa sisters!
I saw my brother in a stranger's face
I saw my sister in a smile
My mother's laughter in a far off place
My father's footsteps in each mile
As Texas District I president, I chose “A friend might be waiting behind a stranger’s face” as our
district theme for the biennium. Some days it seems that should be turned around: “A stranger
might be waiting behind a friend’s face.” There are so many areas in which we disagree that
sometimes it seems like we no longer know our neighbors, coworkers, friends, or sisters at all.
I thought I knew who my neighbor was
We didn't need to be redeemed
Oh, what could I have been thinking of?
Was it all some kind of dream?
For me, World Understanding is an important step toward Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In our
unique country, most people’s ancestors came from someplace else, whether recently or many
many years ago, whether by choice or by force.
I saw my country in the hungry eyes
Of a million refugees
Between the rocks and the rising tide
As they were tossed across the sea
I hope that our committees can assist chapters in our region with ideas for programs, and with
ideas for fundraising for the C.H.E.A.R. program. We’re compiling a book list that should be
available in the next newsletter.
There was a time when we were them
Just as now they all are we
Was there an hour when we took them in?
Or was it all some kind of dream?

Sisters, The deadline for the Excellence in Education Nomination is this weekend. I know you will want to make sure that there are nominations from your state/nation, and I ask that you please send a newsflash or reminder to your chapters reminding them of this important award in Alpha Delta Kappa. In fact, it is the highest award our organization presents to its members. Let us show the strength we have as excellent educators in South Central Region by participation in this highly esteemed award! Previously I sent some information to you, but it can be found under Scholarships>Excellence in Education. If you click on Excellence in Education, there is much information. Forms are submitted electronically through a link called Kaleidoscope. When accessing Kaleidoscope, use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari as your browser. Do not use Internet Explorer. Also, do not use a school district email address either for the person nominating or the person who is nominated. Information may not be accepted by your school district email which is critical for responses and continued applications! Good luck to all those who are nominated! Thank you for participating in the Excellence in Education Award! Faithfully, Paula O'Neill, Chairman SCR EiE
