FACES OF NICHOLS MIDDLE SCHOOL
Name: Joanne Nickerson
School/Role: I work as an ESP in the Summit Program.
How long you have been with NMS and in what capacity:
This is my 3rd year working in the Summit Program.
Brief summary about your background/past experience in education:
I went to Salem State College and Bridgewater State College where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science with a Physical Education Major, a Concentration in Recreation and a Minor in Biology. Before coming to NMS, I worked as a School-Age Childcare Director for the Old Colony Y as well as a Shift Supervisor at the Girls Secure Detention Unit in Brockton. I intend on taking my MTELs within the next two years so I can become a licensed teacher.
What you like best about Middleboro and working at NMS:
I love how Middleboro is so close to Boston and Cape Cod and has a great small town community feel for such a large town. I also love how much spirit our schools have.
Fun fact about yourself:
I represented the USA playing soccer in Europe in 1987. We traveled to Belgium, Holland and West Germany (Germany was split into East and West Germany at that time). I was also the captain of the team. I had such a great time!
Best day of your life:
It was actually the best 16 days of my life. For my 1st wedding anniversary in 1996, my husband and I traveled to Europe with two friends. We went to Germany, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic. Going to Munich, Germany was my favorite part of the trip. I enjoyed going to the Hofbrauhaus where they serve traditional food and beverages of the region and where you can listen to live music such as Oompah Bands.
Favorite season: I love the summer and spending time at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth.
Favorite holiday: Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday. We always have my in-laws over for dinner after attending the Middleboro vs. Carver football game.
Favorite music: I love listening to Jimmy Buffett and music from Broadway shows. But I love all types of music.
Best movie (or actor): I would have to say JAWS is my favorite movie. Our family reunion tradition every summer is to watch JAWS then go swimming at the beach.
(another interesting fact...there is a 12-foot Great White Shark that was tagged off the shore of Cape Cod in 2015 named after my brother...Major Mike).
Best TV show: Seinfield and Friends are shows I can watch over and over again but my current favorite new show is Manifes
And the Band Marches On...
