A Monthly Newsletter from Coronado School of the Arts

Welcome to Coronado School of the Arts -September 2020

Greetings CoSA Families!

Can you believe that we're almost halfway through September ALREADY? Our artists are all hard at work and starting to groove in each of our conservatories. I have been deeply impressed by everyone's creativity and adaptability during distance learning. Great things are happening at CoSA this year, and we aren't going to let being socially distanced hold us back.

I want to take a few moments to address the unfortunate incident that took place during the CoSA pep rally. We understand that the vast majority of our students are kind, accepting people and the inappropriate song does not represent CoSA, our students, or our community. For the pep rally we only admitted accounts with names of CoSA students and faculty, and the link to the event was only shared within the CoSA classrooms. Unfortunately, one person decided to abuse the size of the group to shock and offend. We do not condone this behavior or the message that was played. Because of this incident, half of our conservatory feature videos were not played, so we have attached links to each of them in this newsletter.

We have a few events coming up over the next month listed before. For more information, please reach out to myself or Liz Josset in the CoSA office. Have a great month, we look forward to seeing you all very soon.

I am thrilled to be returning as the CoSA Instrumental Music chair! I previously held this role from 2007-2016 before moving over to Coronado Middle School and Village Elementary. I am also a proud CoSA alum, graduating in the first class of 1997 before heading off to USC to study music. Most of this years' CoSA IM students have been in our programs for several years now, so I am excited to continue to work with them!

Theatre Production, Design and Management

Technical theatre is diving into a detailed stage management unit. They began by taking several leadership and management quizzes to determine what type of manager they are. Discussions about how to communicate with directors, crew, and actors will be had as well as how to adapt one's personality when dealing with difficult situations. They will learn the process from start to finish including pre-production, rehearsals, tech, opening night, running the show, and closing. Although a stage manager does not have artistic input, they often have to come up with creative solutions to ensure the show runs smoothly. Organization is also a key component when preparing all of the paperwork and communicating with the entire staff, cast, and crew.

Visual Art

COSA Visual Art is getting the creative momentum started by sharing works in progress, and artists are offering each other encouraging feedback. Our themes this year are Authenticity, Inspiration and Flow. We are welcoming our new first year students, sparking ideas with our returning students and some are looking ahead to preparing College Application Portfolios. We cannot wait to get in the groove! Keep an eye out for when Museums open to the public again. A few of our students donated works of art from quarantine to be a part of the Coronado Historical Association Museum Archives. A new exhibit will be announced in the near future!

Message from CoSA Foundation

Greetings! Welcome to CoSA’s 25th Year of Educating Emerging Artists!

We have a lot of excitement brewing about CoSA’s milestone year and we’d love for you to be a part of it! There are many ways you can contribute to the success and longevity of CoSA.

Our Givebutter campaigns are underway through the middle of October. This is a terrific way for your family and friends to financially support your CoSA Artist and all funds donated go directly to your family’s Parent Fund account. Why not sit down with your student today to complete their personal campaign page, and start raising funds to support CoSA! A handy Onboarding Guide and description of prizes has been emailed to every student and their parents! Let’s make our Givebutter campaign a success! Please reach out to our CoSA Foundation board member, Nicole Ward, at or via phone at 760.519.3195, if you have any questions about using Givebutter to offset your Parent Fund contribution. Visit today!

We’ve all heard the expression, “Many hands make light work!”, and it’s so true about supporting CoSA! With so many events planned to make the school year and our 25th Anniversary a success, we’d like to tap into your energy and expertise. Visit to see how you can contribute to CoSA and the CoSA Foundation!

Another way you can show your CoSA pride in the community is to sponsor CoSA’s 25th Anniversary Light Pole Banner program. Each spring the City of Coronado displays banners on the light poles along Orange Avenue. CoSA is applying to have our 25th Anniversary celebrated this January through March! Your family can sponsor a conservatory banner for $300 (limit 2 families per conservatory). Email the CoSA Foundation at and let us know which conservatory you’d like to sponsor. Sponsorships will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis, and are pending acceptance by the Coronado Arts Commission of our application to the program.

Do you know, or are you, a CoSA Alum? If so, we want to hear from you! Next June, CoSA’s 25th class of graduates will complete their secondary education as well as their CoSA training. CoSA is extremely proud of our alumni and we would like to include each of them in our 25th anniversary celebrations! Please visit to see how you or your CoSA Alum can get involved!

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about how you and your family can support CoSA and the CoSA Foundation, please reach out to our Executive Administrator, Beth Connelly, at or 858.337.2567.
