Commemorating the birth of Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11th, 1757...
...on the small island of Nevis in the Caribbean. As an immigrant to the United States, Hamilton had a huge impact on the development of the country's political, economic, and legal institutions.
On the anniversary of Hamilton's birthday, The Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society (The AHA Society) celebrates his life and achievements with a program of events called Happy Birthday Hamilton! All are welcome to the events, most of which are free. Join in celebration!

Rededication of the Hamilton Monument at Trinity Church
A rededication ceremony of the Hamilton monument will take place during Happy Birthday Hamilton! The ceremony will feature a special presentation on behalf of Hamilton's birthplace in Nevis. Featured presenters include the Honourable Premier of Nevis and a Hamilton descendant. Our keynote speaker this year is Capt. Gordon Loebl, the US Coast Guard Commander of Sector New York.

12:45-1:15 Unveiling of the Hamilton monument (Trinity churchyard)

Talk: Alexander Hamilton and the Evolution of Free Speech in the Early Republic: From Zenger to Croswell
During his work as a lawyer, Hamilton argued on behalf of journalist Harry Croswell (People v. Croswell) that truthful statements should not be considered libel. Though the judges deadlocked in trial, Hamilton's arguments were written into New York law the following year. Learn more about the precedents that Alexander Hamilton set in the courtroom in Ms. Nair's talk.
The talk will be held at Federal Hall National Memorial on Wall Street in Lower Manhattan.

The National Park Rangers will give a special presentation on "Alexander Hamilton's early life in the Caribbean" at 10:30 am and again at 2:30 pm. Scheduled tours of the house will be given throughout the day.
AHA Members will be visiting the home throughout the day, but make sure to arrive to the Grange by 3:30 for Dr. Thomas Oller's talk on "The Goodness of Alexander Hamilton" (details on his talk listed as separate event below - scroll down to view)

Alexander Hamilton's Birthday Extravaganza at Morris-Jumel Mansion*
From 10 am-12 pm, there will be kids activities and tours of Morris-Jumel Mansion highlighting Alexander Hamilton's visit to the house in 1790.
At noon, Jimmy Napoli, a historian and local tour operator, will give an dynamic presentation, "Hamilton, The Little Lion," on Hamilton's life.
Then at 4 pm, there will be a music concert incorporating classical music popular during Hamilton's lifetime with modern pieces.

Wall Street Walks Tour: Alexander Hamilton's New York*
In honor of Alexander Hamilton's birthday, Wall Street Walks is leading a 90-minute walking tour of the Financial District that focuses particularly on Hamilton's financial legacy.

Informal Gathering and Tour Welcome at Hamilton Grave
All who are interested in visiting the grave on Alexander Hamilton's actual birthday are welcome to join members of The AHA Society there.
Additionally, the AHA Society will welcome participants in the Wall Street Walks tour on "Alexander Hamilton's New York" at their final tour stop at Hamilton's grave.

Birthday Celebration and Talk: "The Goodness of Alexander Hamilton"
During a special birthday celebration, Dr. Thomas Oller will speak on what is often overlooked - the goodness of Alexander Hamilton. Dr. Oller will talk about Hamilton's charity and generosity in many aspects of his life, followed by a brief Q&A session.
Dr. Oller is a lecturer in English at Boston University and previously at Harvard University.

Tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art - American Wing
Don't miss out on a special, narrated tour of the American wing of the Met by AHA Society Vice-President Nicole Scholet. The guided tour includes visits to period pieces, portraits of Hamilton's contemporaries, the iconic Crossing of the Delaware, and, of course, a stop at the iconic 1792 full-length portrait of Alexander Hamilton by John Trumbull which was recently donated to the museum from a private collection.
Tour meeting location: Room 704 (American Wing, 2nd Floor, east balcony overlooking the Charles Englehard Court)
*The tour itself is free but does not include the recommended museum admission. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art website to view the suggested donation for admission. The tour will start at 6:30, so please allow enough time to enter the museum and arrive at the American wing by then (recommended to arrive to the Museum between 6:00 and 6:15)
