W.O.W.
Sunday, January 24, 2021
On Monday, January 25, Gwinnett County Public Schools will resume in-person instruction for students whose families selected this option.
Tuesday, January 26, is a scheduled Digital Learning Day for all students. This is the first of four at-home asynchronous learning days this semester that will provide additional planning time for teachers. All students will access lessons in eCLASS but will not have virtual class time with their teachers on these scheduled days. On Tuesday, meals will be available for curbside pick-up at schools, and, the district will deliver meals along all bus routes countywide. Families should expect buses to run their routes from approximately 10:45 a.m. to noon, beginning at the first stops on the route.
Again, in-person instruction will begin again on Monday, January 25, followed by a scheduled digital learning day on Tuesday, January 26. Following this districtwide digital learning day, students will return to their selected instructional preference for the remainder of the week.
SUGAR HILL CHURCH JOINING THE EFFORT SHOES FOR WEST AFRICA
GUINEA-BISSAU is a West African country that is located in one of the poorest regions and most desolate regions on the African continent. Guinea-Bissau is plagued with difficult terrain and with the fact that much of the country (70%+) is living well below the poverty line … for Africa. This little country also has become a stronghold for the Latin American cocaine cartels which has made life extremely difficult for its inhabitants.
The single greatest physical need that these people struggle with is worms. Worms that are created in large part to unsanitary conditions, lack of fresh water and virtually no health care assistance. The best way to combat these worms, until such a time as we can get healthcare experts and fresh water to Guinea-Bissau, is to provide them with shoes. More than 80% of the population do not own a pair of shoes. Even if they had the funds to purchase shoes, there is literally no store in which to purchase them.
As a result of this humanitarian crisis, Sugar Hill Church is attempting to collect thousands of shoes to ship to Guinea-Bissau. Starting Sunday, January 24, Sugar Hill Church will begin collecting used athletic shoes (think sneakers and running/tennis shoes). We will collect shoes through February 15, 2021.
Will you help us by collecting USED SHOES, NOT NEW SHOES. [If we send new shoes, they have to pay a tariff/tax on them.] If we send used and slightly used shoes, they are allowed into the country free of taxes and fees.
Collection bins will be located at the following locations:
- The Large Shipping Container @ Sugar Hill Church [front parking lot]
- Lanier High School
- Lanier Middle School
- Sugar Hill Elementary School
- Sycamore Elementary School
- White Oak Elementary School
- City Hall in Sugar Hill
These used shoes will change the lives of thousands of people and bring hope to a region in desperate need. Most every family in America has several pairs of shoes that can be shipped to Guinea-Bissau, without ever missing them. Please tie the laces of the shoes together and drop them in the containers located at the above locations between Sunday, January 24 and February 15, 2021.
Thank you for your assistance and your support in serving the people of Guinea-Bissau!
