National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period from 15 September to 15 October in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. In honor of this, OSES will have a daily Hispanic Heritage month trivia question. Yesterdays answer was about 54 million. Today’s question is: This famous actress, singer, and business women was born in New York City, however was raised by Puerto Rican parents. She is regarded as the most influential Hispanic performer in the United States. Who is this individual?
Have you ever wondered about the science behind superheroes? Explore superhero science from home with Superhero STEAM Night on Friday October 2nd, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm! Details will be sent home in a flyer this week for the special live zoom event, hosted by Ms. Martinez and Ms. Wiltrout. We hope to see you there, superheroes!

Parents can now make FREE online payments for most school expenses online with School Pay. This includes School Lunch and After Care! Simply log into your secure online School Pay Parent Center account and pay for items including after school care fees, club fees, field trips, class fees, student fees and more. The first step is creating your Parent Center Account at schoolpay.com Please go to "Charter Schools" tab and then choose your school name as "Orlando Science Elementary School" to complete the steps for creating your parent account. If you have any problems using the School Pay system please call 1 888-88-MYPAY

In Science, first grade is on Topic 3: Matter and Movement. Students will or have already built catapults in their class. They really enjoy STEAM Wednesday’s!
Reminders:
-Students should be getting their weekly iReady minutes. Each Monday thru Sunday, students should have 45 minutes in Reading and 45 minutes in Math. This is a school wide expectation and grade.
-A Weekly Reading Log should be completed.
-Students have a Monthly AR goal to meet for the school and may also have a weekly AR goal to meet for their teacher.

Picture Day
On Campus Students and Staff
Date: Friday, October 16th
Students will be photographed on a class by class basis.
Innovative Learning Students
Dates: Thursday, November 5th – Friday, November 6th
Students will sign up for time slots on these two days.Only the student will be able to enter the building during this time. Families will use the drop-off/pick-up pattern to allow their student to enter the cafeteria, be photographed, and exit. Students will have their temperatures checked upon entering and need to wear a mask up to having their photograph taken and after.
Ms. DiNuzzo’s class sharing their personal narrative snack boxes. We complete activities and write about our personal experiences. The students love it!
SECOND
Second-graders have been learning about honesty and the importance of telling the truth. We have also been talking about the contributions of various Hispanic Americans in honor of Hispanic Heritage month.

Third graders loved learning about bridges last week, and creating a bridge out of index cards for a STEM challenge! This week we are learning more about cause and effect.
In math, we continue working on memorizing multiplication facts!
Please make sure that you check OSES Connect to ensure that your child isn’t missing any work. Report cards will be going out soon!
Remember each week your child should be taking one AR test and completing the other homework assigned by their teacher!

Face-to-Face PE
Starting the week of 10/12, we will participate in the Magic Fit Challenge for 4 weeks. Each week, the challenge/assignment will be posted on my Google Classroom. To receive one complimentary Magic game ticket (pending on COVID 19 and CDC guidelines), students must complete all 4 weeks of the challenges by each week’s due date. Please join my Google Classroom if not yet. The join code has been posted on the OSES Connect announcement.
Bringing water bottles, wearing a pair of sneakers and masks are PE requirements. Please make sure your students are prepared for PE every day.
STEM
Families, please be sure your child is in their STEM Google Classroom for their class - this is a reminder for both our Face to Face learners and Innovative students. All students should be in their correct STEM Google Classroom by October 13th. Thank you for your assistance!
Both our Face to Face and Innovative Learners have been focusing on their creativity as they build marble mazes using legos (or, for our innovative students, a variety of materials they may have at home!) Our 3rd-5th grade learners were able to learn about the Greek Myth of the Minotaur as we discussed ways to make our mazes complex and complicated. For our Kindergarten-second grade learners, we focused on the many different ways we can show our creativity, including in building new designs!
