No School Friday, October 16

Conferences: October 22 & 26 (3:00-9:00)

Principal's Message

Good day! The weather is getting colder, leaves are changing colors and will soon begin falling. This is also the time of the year as the routines for students are ingrained into how we operate. We are approaching the mid-term for 1st Semester. Conferences are a great time to speak with teachers about the progress of your child and how to foster the school-to-home relationship. By no means is the only time you can check on the progress of your child. We encourage you to consistently check Powerschool or contact teachers with any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing the number of Franklin families in the building in the coming weeks.

Franklin Student in the News

6th Grader, Isaac Taylor, was all over the news on September 28 as he was recognized for his work bringing the Buddy Bench to Cedar Rapids' elementary schools. The special event was held at Arthur Elementary and included special guests Governor Terry Branstad, Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, Superintendent Dr. Brad Buck, and other district staff.

1st Semester Conferences

Conferences will be here before we know it. This year's conferences will line up with mid-term of each semester. The dates for this year's conferences are Thursday, October 22 & Monday, October 26. Each day conferences will run from 3:00-9:00PM. For the fall conferences we will have parents sign up to meet with teachers.

You should have received a letter in the mail informing you of the online sign-up. The window for scheduling is set to open this Monday, October 12 and will remain open through Sunday, October 18. PTA Volunteer for Food-Conferences

Thank you for your generosity. Our staff greatly appreciates it.

Spotlight Students

This year we will be recognizing students who exemplify what it means to do your PARRT at Franklin. We call this feature our Spotlight Students. At least every month teachers will select six students from their respective grade level. PARRT is the curriculum we use with our students to teach appropriate and expected behaviors in the school and positive relationships with their classmates. PARRT stands for:

P: Personal Best

A: Active Listening

R: Respect

R: Responsibility

T: Trustworthiness

Friends of Franklin

Want to support Franklin? Check out our page that has information about our Friends of Franklin. We are extremely appreciative for the amount of support that our PTA has provided us. If you've seen our video announcement system in the school it was made partially possible because of the PTA purchasing 4 TVs.

Dance Marathon

Franklin will be hosting its tenth dance marathon on Friday, November 6th from 3:00-5:00 P.M. in the lower gym. It is open to ALL Franklin students and admission is only $5.00. For those new to Franklin, this is not your average middle school dance. No awkward slow dances, no waiting to be asked to dance, and no talent necessary! All students are expected to dance as fast as they can and as much as they can, with appropriate breaks for snacks of course!

For those unfamiliar with dance marathon as a charity fundraiser, this event is affiliated with the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon and the Children’s Miracle Network. Funds raised help support pediatric cancer patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

Students can purchase t-shirts to commemorate the event. They're available for $10 with checks made payable to Franklin Middle School. Orders are due Thursday, October 15. Students can pick-up an order form from the Main Office or you can view online at: http://franklin.cr.k12.ia.us/assets/23/6/Dance_Marathon_2015_t-shirt_order_form.pdf

Magazine Sales Recap

We would like to thank our students and their families who participated in this year's magazine sales. We understand the time this requires and we're very appreciative that families made this effort to help Franklin. While we have seen an annual decrease (building and district-wide) in the total amount of money brought in, we are not decreasing the thanks. We've mentioned in previous e-Newsletters the areas of our building the money goes to fund. While we're still busy completing the final sales, we are estimating the total sales to be between $22,000-25,000. Nearly 50% of the total sales will come right back to support our students.

Below you will find one of the many incentives and rewards for those students who did a great job selling magazines or collecting donations. On Wednesday of this week students jumped in stretch limo to the Pizza Ranch to participate in their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet. It looks like they had a great time.
