Changes to Online Learning for 2017-18
We are receiving a lot of questions about these changes and want to help clarify what this means for your district starting next school year. Also, we want you to know how GenNET Online Learning can continue to support your schools in their online course offerings. Although there are changes to the rules for online learning beginning in 2017-18, you can continue to use the GenNET Portal for all online course enrollments.
A Few Details Regarding 5-O-D (21F)
Requirements include:
- Parental consent of online courses
- Michigan-certified teachers
- All courses used by a district must be listed in either their local district/ISD catalog or the Statewide catalog (micourses.org)
- A mentor for the student (professional employee of district; may serve as teacher of record if mentor meets definition), who monitors progress, ensures access to technology, and assists as needed
When 5-O-D (21F) was initially launched, it was not intended for students enrolled in more than 2 virtual courses. Later, revisions were made that allow more than 2 courses for a student, provided...
- The district has determined it is in the best interest of the student
- The student agrees with the recommendation of the district
- The district, in collaboration with the student, has developed an Education Development Plan (EDP) in a form and manner specified by MDE, which is kept on file by the district.
The Pupil Accounting Manual will be revised prior to the 2017-18 school year to reflect the recent changes.
What's Next?
- GenNET courses that meet the 21F requirements will be listed on the statewide catalog (search the local catalog for Genesee Intermediate School District at micourses.org). You can view the course lists, but there is no option for enrolling in courses via the micourses.org site, so you will be redirected to enroll students via GenNET (www.gennet.us).
- You can continue to use the GenNET Portal as you have in the past, and all courses can be viewed in our easy-to-use catalog.
The GenNET Portal provides districts with access to over 2,000 discounted quality courses from multiple course providers, and GenNET staff assist with all aspects of the enrollment process. There are no contracts required, and schools can enroll one student in one course, or hundreds of students in a full schedule of courses! There are no fees or contracts required to use the GenNET Portal, and we only bill you for the courses and materials ordered for your students.
GenNET Continues to be Your One-Stop Shop for Online Learning!
The GenNET Online Learning Portal will continue to provide districts with a user-friendly catalog of discounted online courses. (Click here to see our course options: catalog.). Our staff will ensure all courses on our Portal are 21F-compliant prior to the start of the 2017-18 school year, with Michigan-certified teachers. Our full catalog of courses will also be listed in the Statewide catalog (micourses.org) under Genesee Intermediate School District. In addition, we will have a catalog of Blended Learning options (all you'll need to provide is the Michigan-certified teacher).
