Mary's Mount Primary School
Term 2, Week 4 - 20 May 2022
PRINCIPAL'S NEWS
Dear Parents and Carers
NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
A shout out to all the volunteers who support our school during this special week where we stop to say "thank you". Volunteering not only value adds to the lives of others, but to your own. By volunteering you find out your character strengths, and talents you may have been unaware of, and your mental and physical health benefit greatly by engaging in acts of service to others.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Gandhi
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” – Leo Buscaglia
RATs COLLECTION– Available from the Front Office
Free RATs will support our students to continue to attend school for face-to-face learning and will minimise disruption to their schooling. You will be able to test your child at home if they are feeling unwell. You can also use these RATs if your child is a close contact to enable them to test daily and continue to attend school, as long as they receive a negative result and remain asymptomatic. I attach a letter from WA Health which explains how to use the RATs.
WA Health Letter on free RATs for schools
· Parents/caregivers can collect from the front office during school hours 8.30am to 3.10pm.
If your child becomes symptomatic, they should stay home and be tested for COVID-19. You should notify the school if your child tests positive for COVID-19. Refer to healthywa.wa.gov.au for information on close contact definition, testing and isolation requirements.
Thank you for your continued efforts in keeping our school COVID-19 safe.
NAPLAN Extension – Friday 27 May
Due to COVID, high numbers of students have been unable to complete the NAPLAN testing within the prescribed test window. The School Curriculum and Standards Authority, as the Test Administration Authority in Western Australia, has consulted with ACARA on this issue. NAPLAN window of testing has been extended up to and including Friday, 27 May 2022.
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY EVENT
Congratulations to all children for the way they engaged in the cross-country event on Tuesday. With many children coming back from illness or falling ill the afternoon of the cross country, your efforts are to be commended. The interschool event is scheduled for Friday 27 May. For those children involved, Mrs. Curulli will be sending a letter with further information.
KALAMUNDA GARDEN FESTIVAL – Sunday 22 May – Stirk Park 9am to 2pm
This Sunday MMPS will have a stall at the Kalamunda Garden Festival selling worm tea, sunflower seeds and fairy floss with proceeds going to the children in Ukrain. If you are free on Sunday morning, pop on by our stall and say hello.

MMPS SCHOOL PHOTO DAY - TUES 31 MAY
Once again MSP Photography will be taking our annual school photos. This year, photos will be taken on Tuesday 31 May. Children will need to wear their correct full winter uniform, including shirt, pants, winter dress or culottes, school tie (see note below), jumper, school socks, school hair ties, polished shoes and be well groomed (no tights). Students will wear the school tie for photos, however if you don't have a tie, we will have spares available for students to borrow on photo day.
Orders for student photos need to be placed online.
Your personalised Online Order Information Slip was sent home with students last week. The slip provides you with detailed instructions on how to order and pay for your photos online. Please read the instructions on your child’s order form carefully to ensure that your order is correct. Order slips DO NOT need to be returned to the class teacher or school. Last day for online ordering is 7 June 2022. Orders placed after this date will incur a substantial late fee, so please note this date.
FAMILY PORTRAITS
If you have more than one child at MMPS and are interested in having a group portrait of your children, you will need to collect a “Family Photo Order Form” from the front office. The Family Photo Order Form needs to be returned in the drop off box to the front office by Friday 27 MAY including payment. Payment details for these photos are included on the family forms. Should you not collect and pay for a family portrait, the family photo will not be taken.
Family portraits will commence at 8.30am on school photo day and parents will be responsible for taking their children to St Joseph’s Hall for these photos. It is imperative that families who are having family portraits are on time and ready to commence at 8.30am.
If you have any questions about school photos or photo day, please contact the school office.

SOCIAL WORKER CORNER
Resilience is being able to bounce back from stress, challenge, and adversity. And the great news is that resilience is something that can be nurtured in all children. Helping our children to grow into healthy, thriving adults is complex, but it is not about clearing all challenges and adversity out of their way. Of course, sometimes we would like to pick them up and lift them over the things that cause them to stumble, but it wouldn’t necessarily be doing them any favours. Navigating through challenges alongside supportive adults, can help our children to develop the skills they need to flourish.
In the below video Dr Kaylene Henderson shares some simple tips on helping us as parents support our children to build resilience through allowing them to face both the ups and downs of life.
She encourages us that children need repeated practice in dealing with manageable setbacks and disappointments. She shares that often what we can do to support them best is not to rescue them. But rather, to let them know that we understand their disappointment and will help them to navigate the challenges that arise.
While it might be tempting to protect our child from setbacks and disappointments, we are giving them a greater gift by teaching them to manage these situations and building their resilience along the way.

Thanks to the Bellingeri Family, we will be selling local, all natural, Jarrah blend honey for $20 a Kilo. We are also asking students to have a go at designing the label, there will be a competition running for all students to submit ‘bee-autiful’ creations. The lucky winner will have their design printed and used as the honey pot label.
Please refer to the competition design guidelines which will be sent home with students tomorrow before making a start on your unique label.
Honey can be purchase via the Quickcliq event page and will also available to purchase from the school (dates and times will be advised closer to the time).
Honey will be distributed after the label competition closes on Tuesday 7 June.
So let’s create a ‘buzz’ and get some yummy honey into everyone’s tummies! All funds raised will go towards a new Marys Mount branded marquee and 4 x new faction marquees - just in time for the upcoming school sports carnival.

Student Care is a world-wide policy that is purchased by educational institutes to cover all enrolled students.
All students enrolled at Mary’s Mount Primary School are covered 24/7 by the CCI Student Care Insurance Policy. Payments are not only made for out of pocket expenses, but lump sum benefits for accidents including fractures and damaged teeth.
