Resilience & Grit
What makes a student successful and happy? Research has shown that students who are able to push through challenges and keep trying despite setbacks are more likely to be successful and happy as they grow and develop. It is important for students to learn how to perceive setbacks as a necessary stepping stone toward their goals. Students who possess resilience and grit are more likely to emotionally regulate and balance life's challenges.

Current Drug Trend: Is Your Teen Vaping?
The CDC reports that one in four teens are using vaporizers. Vaporizers or e-cigarettes, vape pens, vape pipes, e-cigars, e-vaporizers typically contain nicotine. Nicotine, that is often flavored, comes in a fluid form that is placed in the vaporizers. The fluid heats into a vapor the user inhales. Vaporizers use about one third of the nicotine found in a traditional cigarette. While proponents of vaporizers say it is safer, safer is not the same as safe. Nicotine is dangerous to teens' developing brain. Selling vaporizers to minors is illegal in the United States. However, it is very easy for teens to get these devices online. A popular brand of vaporizers found in Chatham is Juul (picture below).
Vaporizers are also being used to smoke marijuana and other illegal drugs. A substance called "Dab" which looks like ear wax is easily made (quick YouTube instructional video) and placed in the vaporizer to smoke. The vapor has a low odor and dissipates in the air quickly making it difficult to detect.
